That is sad that someone would do such a thing. I mean being a little dirty is one thing, but that is gross and not to mention the fact that some were broke!

I have multiple buff brahmas. When i started out on this breed, the hens were too light. I went to a different fair, and bought a handsome, darker buff rooster. I put him in with th hens and collected their eggs for the incubator. The off spring were a darker buff color, and now they have won my 4-H poultry show two years in a row.

I don't know enough about turkey eggs or cats to comment on either. Hatching eggs in general should be kept clean, not washed. The best way to accomplish that is to provide lots of clean straw or shavings in the nest, and collect eggs as frequently as possible. Rainy/muddy weather can make keeping eggs clean difficult. I can't really imagine any good excuse for sending eggs in THAT condition? I would hope the seller is just completely ignorant as opposed to intentionally trying to rip someone off. Not that that would make it right. Chalk it up as lesson learned. Shipped eggs are a gamble. Reputation of the seller is so important.

I know better than getting sucked into a "what sex is this chicken" question! Anyhoo....my Bantam Light cockerels at that age would have black showing in their saddles. That being said, your bird could just be an under colored hatchery bird. Are there any pointed feathers in the saddle? Female saddle(actually "cushion" is the correct term)feathers are rounded, while male saddles tend to be more pointed.

While I'm still in the whining mood. The stinking hatcher has to be scrubbed and cleaned and disinfected EVERY Tuesday to be ready for eggs on Wednesday. Eggs set in incubator every Saturday. Chicks hatch every weekend. Chicks wing-banded every Friday. I always feel like i'm going crazy this time of year! Plus the every day tending to all the adult birds. Your turn to remind me Gary!

At least you had the good sense to be drawn to a breed that is personable, robust, generally pleasant to be around, and just look at them, absolute eye candy. I think of some of the folks doing the same things we do with breeds that tend to be frail, or flighty/crazy, cantankerous, or just plain mean, or just simply common looking, and I wonder about their mental state. All in all, you are doing an outstanding job as an ambassador for the club, and the breed, speaking to the masses here. Kind of growing into the position as you go along, even using your words to work out a missunderstanding here recently, the old Tim might not have had the patience. Keep up the good work.

I've seen some advertised, but this is usually accompanied only by pictures of chicks, so I have my suspicions.

That's interesting. I wonder how they would look as cuckoo? I doubt I would pursue it because I have too many projects as is lol but I might let her hatch out a few chicks just for fun. This cuckoo male has mega feathering going on, on his shanks and outer toes.
