Is that good Tim? We just saw some of these visiting another farm a couple if weeks ago (not the same source the babies were from), but liked them a lot, then saw these available and thought it would be nice to add. Any critiques would be nice, as these are really the first birds we got with any breeding attempts in mind, other than one legbar (roo didn't make it), the others in our flock are just egg layers, definitely not breeder stock.
Vulture hocks are not good. If one out of three is showing them, chances are all three are carrying them. I was just using your experience as an example of what I have stated many times here. Someone knowingly, or possibly worse...UNKNOWINGLY....sold you birds with obvious VHs using the name "Powell" as a selling point. VHs are a very big obstacle to overcome in a breeding program. Its VERY difficult for long time breeders with a working knowledge of genetics, much more to someone new to chickens. Enjoy your birds. They will be awesome as backyard birds. I just hope you won't breed them to sell them as the person you bought them from did. I'm sorry. I'm really just aggravated at the person who sold them to you. I hate to imagine what they charged you. On a brighter note...maybe they will be decent layers. Again, I'm so sorry. I know i sound like a big jerk. I need a snickers.

My white brahma hen plucked off all her foot feathers. Is this a normal thing? My dark brahma has not.

Oh, ok then, glad I picked ones that seemed more hen like (some of the birds had a bit more comb development), they can just join the layers as pretty girls...they were also moving a lot during the pics, not really great shots of them. They will enjoyed either way!

I would be curious to see a pic of the vulture hocks again. I tried looking back to find it, but couldn't. I will be purchasing some light Brahma juveniles this September. I am trying to do all the research I can. I hope to choose quality stock.

Thanks!

VHs are seldom ever a problem in the Lights. I have not heard of any with VHs. The picture of the chick sitting on the back of the hand is one of the best examples of vulture hocks I have seen. Who are you getting your lights from?

That is plenty of information. I keep learning new things here . Just out of curiosity; why are VH bad?

There is a standard that each breed is to adhere to. The American Poultry Association puts out the"American Standard of Perfection". The American Bantam Association, the "Bantam Standard". These "standards" are what birds are judged by in APA and ABA sanctioned shows. In some countries VHs are okay. In the USA VHs are a disqualification(DQ). IF one is just raising birds for their own enjoyment in their back yards VHs are just fine. When someone is breeding birds to sell or show, in my opinion, it is wrong to sell birds like that.(Unless they are 100% honest and tell the buyer EXACTLY what they are getting)

Mark Peterson. Do you know his birds? Seems you have good knowledge, and i would like your opinion. That is if you have had your snickers ;-) he came highly recommended.
We are getting some for our kiddos to show in 4-h. But we wanted to start with good quality stock. We really enjoy the chickens we got last year. And have decided to make a hobby of it :) the kids had their first fun match type show this spring. It was so much fun!!
I hope the kiddos will at some point want to do more showing. And hubby and I would like to keep the hobby going once the kids are grown.
