Mark Peterson. Do you know his birds? Seems you have good knowledge, and i would like your opinion. That is if you have had your snickers ;-) he came highly recommended.
We are getting some for our kiddos to show in 4-h. But we wanted to start with good quality stock. We really enjoy the chickens we got last year. And have decided to make a hobby of it :) the kids had their first fun match type show this spring. It was so much fun!!
I hope the kiddos will at some point want to do more showing. And hubby and I would like to keep the hobby going once the kids are grown.
Mark Peterson is without a doubt the best LF Light Brahma man in the country.

This weekend I am going to look at some light and dark brahmas to add to my flock. I only want hens but these will not be sexed. They are 9-10 weeks old so I am hoping I will be able to tell cockerels from pullets. Can anyone offer tips on what to look for when I pick the birds?

Thanks to everyone who responded. I ended up picking one dark and one light. The light were really hard to sex. Ended up making the most educated guess we could based on the size and redness of the comb and waddles relative to the others. Here is a pic of our new additions:

I've been agonizing over whether one of my light brahmas is a boy or a girl... posted a few days back and then a little while before that... I've gotten lots of boy guesses and lots of girl guesses... I've sort of given up on "it" and put "it" out with the rest of the boys in what we call the meat coop... lol I put all 3 side-by-side and snapped some pictures... all 3 are light brahmas from a mid-May hatch, so they're right around 11 weeks old if I remember right. The one in the middle has ALWAYS been huge compared to the other two. The one on the left seems to have more black feathering, the one on the right was the one I had been keeping out in hopes that "it" turned out to be a pullet, but I'm fairly sure it belongs out in the meat coop with the rest of the boys. ;) Any input on that decision would be welcome! lol Sorry for picture overload... and for some reason my pictures posted above my comment and it won't let me cut/paste the text... I'm lazy so I'm just going to leave it here... ;)

Hope you are better able to tell than I am! Hard to see from the picture, but your two are more convincing pullets than my questionable one above!! lol

There is a standard that each breed is to adhere to. The American Poultry Association puts out the"American Standard of Perfection". The American Bantam Association, the "Bantam Standard". These "standards" are what birds are judged by in APA and ABA sanctioned shows. In some countries VHs are okay. In the USA VHs are a disqualification(DQ). IF one is just raising birds for their own enjoyment in their back yards VHs are just fine. When someone is breeding birds to sell or show, in my opinion, it is wrong to sell birds like that.(Unless they are 100% honest and tell the buyer EXACTLY what they are getting)

Thanks Tim. I know nothing about showing chickens. I am a bit interested in doing that some day. The chicks I have are hatchery chicks so I know they are not quality stock. Is it possible to show any chicken or do they have to be related to other show chickens. I think that is how it is with dogs. Not that I have showed dogs either.
