My quality on my Brahmas will need work so I will be hatching a lot. Hopefully I will get something to work with. We have been hatching off our Gold Laced and Buff Laced all fall and winter and its early to be sure but I have a couple of promising GoldLaced . Still waiting on the Blue Columbian to. Lay with any regularity, hopefully shortly.

Question: Does anyone on here have experience with Darks, as well as the Buffs and Lights? Tammy N, did you have any to compare personalities with your Darks? I was thinking of adding a couple Dark pullets to my little backyard flock this spring and I heard they're not quite as friendly. Your thoughts?

Also, Tim, how does the Bantam Brahma's personality compare to the L.F.?

Hi Vicki - I just answered your question on the Backyard Brahma thread. As far as my experience goes, the darks are the friendliest.

I have 13 females right now, 4 hens and 9 pullets. I got my first egg in about a month yesterday. My birds do take a break in the winter. Laying should start to pick up now with the daily increase in photo-period. I don't use lights for earlier laying. Many people do. My bantam pullets are "prime" at 5.5-6.5 months, cockerels a bit later, 6-7 months. Anyhoo....March to May hatching is soon enough for most of the Fall shows I attend. I usually get in too big a hurry to start hatching. I don't think I'll set any eggs till the first of Feb. Instead of setting every week, I think I'll hold eggs on a turner and set every two weeks. I hope the over-all quality of my line will allow for fewer birds hatched. Its easy to hatch TOO many. I'm thinking 25 of both varieties, MAYBE 35.

I wish it was easy for me to hatch too many. I've set like three dozen eggs so far and got one chick( that of course died on me ). I have three fertile eggs in my bator right now and the other ten look like duds but it's still early so maybe( although one has a nice sized spider in it ). I have one rooster who is fertilizing most of the eggs but his hens are barely laying. I have another rooster who isn't fertilizing eggs and his hens are laying like mad dogs. I got the mites on the non fertile rooster all taken care of( there were hundreds of them on him ) and it's been a bit over a week. Maybe I just need to give him more time? I think he is trying because when I separated him to give him a bath( because of the mites )and when I went to put him back in and he went right at it. He didn't do it right but he still had the drive. They're about ten or eleven months old.

x2 - How do Bantam brahmas compare to LF in personality? I know they are probably more active, but I have heard they are not as friendly or personable ... Is that true? I heard Ideal has pretty good bantam Brahmas for a hatchery, anyone ever gotten any?

There are so many nice ones at the shows
I have bbs they are sweet and funny they do fine with my Barnevelders and Buckeyes

I will be getting them from a hatchery, just not sure yet which one or in bantam or LF. I do not have the time or desire to seek out a breeder of each breed I like, in order to get one or two birds, when I only want them for sweet pets and eggs. I also have no interest in ever buying a bird again raised by someone else, because I want them to be pets and raise them a certain way, plus I have had nasty parasites, disease come in that way. And honestly I have had bad experiences with "breeders" (obviously they weren't good breeders) who were dishonest with me. I at least know what to expect when I buy from a hatchery. If I get serious about a specific breed I'll seek out eggs/ chicks from a respectable breeder, but for now I just enjoy having a couple of smorgasbord of various breeds, and hatcheries are a great way to do that.

I fall more in the Backyard Brahmas catogory, I just came to this thread to ask about bantam v. LF Brahma personality.

Well said, QuoVadis. I just wanted female chicks for my grand kids, and the only way to get them is from a hatchery. Once they were in the brooder I decided to hatch some "Gold laced Brahma" eggs...all cockerels!!!! I guess I should have counted my blessings with the three hatchery chicks.

So, I'm getting in the mood to set up the incubator and am trying to decide what I want to buy. If I put a blue/gold partridge over a dark, what would I get? What about the opposite, a dark over a blue/gold partridge? I'm sure that big medicine will be able to answer my question, he's the bomb when it comes to breeding.

Also, which of the colors tend to have the best breed characteristics? I've read that darks tend to have vulture hocks, lights tend to be lighter and that the buffs are the best for type. Any thoughts?
