Brahma Thread

Hi, I just bough 3 week old brahma chicks and although I was able to sex my own mixed chicks when they were born, I am overwhelmed with these chicks. 11 chicks and honestly they all look the same. Brahma's are new to me so any links or help would be appreciated. I can see now why bands are used as that would have been a God send.

I am sure in time they will interact with me but for now they just run from me. My own chicks who are almost 3 weeks old are pecking at my shoelaces and running around. I've been waiting for brahma's for so long. I hope they turn out great. I am hoping to also set up breeding pens next year if all goes well. Not hatchery chicks and light brahma. Ill have to take some pics tomorrow but like I mentioned they all just look the same.

I'm busting in here to ask the true experts (I posted in the ? thread, but who knows the answers I'll get). I was sent 7 packing peanuts from Ideal...the peanuts are now 6-week old brahmas, full-size not bantams. I'm wondering if day-old chick sexing in brahmas is 100% clear, like sex-linked chicks, or a little ambiguous. I'm expecting all are roos (and certainly, quite a few clearly are roos) but I'm hoping for one or two pullets. I haven't found anything online that is helping me out.

not 100 percent sure but usually packing peanuts are cockerels

But, hearing about how often hatcheries mis-sex, I would wait and see. Usually, if some are feathering out significantly faster than the others, those are pullets. Otherwise, it is just a waiting game until there are some more obvious signs. I've never bought any from a hatchery, so I can only go on what I've seen in the BYC threads.

my brahmas had different tails at an early age, are all the tails exactly the same shape? rounded, pointed, V, ........

I have 9 brahmas from a light and dark cross. 7 buff pulletts and 2 light roos. They are 16 weeks old today. Something is going on with the roos neck feathers. They almost look like naked necks. Will try to get some pics tomorrow

Yeah, about that. Both dark and light Brahmas are silver based, as would be all resulting chicks from of that cross. So getting buff pullets, I'm thinking your birds are likely out of a buff male, and depending how clean the backs on your pullets are, either a light, or possibly dark hen.

Thanks for the replies, I am figuring they are all males but I'm holding out hope for one pullet!

im not sure about the parents and how they were crossed. I love my mutt brahmas anyway. Im concerned about the neck feathers falling out

Have you checked for lice? Any mean feather pluckers among the group? Someone on another thread had a mouse coming into their coop and eating parts of their chickens feathers. Noticed any mice problems?
