I am not going to lie, kinda jealous of all you Brahma parents. I am anxious to get mine. I found a local breeder( 5 hours) that has some. They have over 30 breeds.muddyhooffarm.vpweb.com I will be able to pick them up so I won't have to worry about the eggs getting scrambled in the mail. I still want to get some blue/ gold partridge and they don't offer those so I will still have to look around or check into some possible leeds. I have to wait until the end of march when the eggs will be ready so for now I am without.

Keep the pics coming....

Did anyone see what cheryls partridge quad finally sold for on rare breed auction............over $1400.00, thats what hard work and alot of feed and other costs can achiev. I am so sad that she had to give these beautiful birds up because of health concerns. Best of luck Cheryl
Give them up???? Are you kidding? She got 1420 dollars for birds, in my view, with about as much "Brahma" type as a white leghorn. TYPE makes the breed. Not a pretty bird that the un-informed drool over.

Thank you for saying what I've been thinking. These birds don't appear to be the same breed as the Lights we see in the show hall. I'm still envious of the LF Lights Chad exhibited in Shawnee last year.

My 5 month old gals from Ideal... They are so quiet and mellow. I love how their heads look like doves. My next order will be a straight run
From Mcmurry...

Beautiful birds. How was your experience with ideal? I jsut ordered so am anxious to see how everyone arrives since I have never ordered this early in the year. My buffs also have what I always called a more feminine head.....my lights look like eagles lol

Since things seem like they could get heated, I would like to say that everyone has different goals and deserves respect. While showing and breeding are respectable so too is someone's goal to have a sustainable flock that they can enjoy. My best dogs have been mutts and so are some of the best birds.....its all in your goals and if in the end you achieve those goals then your efforts should be applauded.
IT was never my intent to deminish the value of any chicken or any flock or breeder, you are very correct in saying that everyone has thier own goals in raising birds. The diffrences between the birds now being developing and the standards is that these are project birds...hopefully they will be brought to satisfy the standards that exist and eventually allowed to be shown with other established color patterns that have been accepted.

Very good experience with Ideal. Highly recommend them. Love my hatchery chickens. Our local feed store orders from them. My first three who just started laying are outstanding... egg every day from each... double yolk once a week from one. One silkie was doa.. replaced on 2nd order no questions asked. Great place to get started with a rare breed. I wouldnt be into chickens if it wasnt for the hatcheries. Have fun with your new babies. Brahmas are a joy to raise.

Yeah, I'd like to see a pic. of a "good Brahma" too. Only because I am curious. Hatchery chicks are great for me. I don't intend to show them, cull them, or eat them. All my pets are just that; my friends.

If you click on my profile there are over a hundred assorted photos. The main word one would use to describe a Brahma is WIDE. Their head should be WIDE, their back should be WIDE. The tail should be well spread and resemble an inverted "U". The APA recognizes three varieties of Brahmas in Bantam and Large....Buff, Dark, Light. The ABA recognizes five varieties of Bantam Brahmas, Light, Buff, Dark, White, and Black. White are never seen at shows and Blacks seldom. Partridge is a Non-recognized variety in Large and Bantam that are seen fairly frequently at shows. There is a group working to have Large Partridge Brahmas recognized. I believe they are calling them "Gold Partridge" as they are a bit lighter than the traditional "partridge" variety found in other breeds.
I would recommend anyone that is truly interested in raising/breeding, and hopefully exhibiting QUALITY Brahmas, BUY A STANDARD. Go to a APA/ABA sanctioned show. Meet Brahma breeders. It is hard for me to be honest and use too much candor on this thread. People are easily offended.
I promise you. Birds ten times better than those on that auction could have been had for a fraction of that cost. Go to shows in your area, meet breeders, join the American Brahma Club. Educate yourselves BEFORE you waste that kind of money on "pretty birds".
Please, no offense intended to anyone. Just expressing my opinion.

Tim
