Thats just part of having project birds. They seldom breed true. Ruthless culling is required. Most people who get them have neither the desire nor stomache for culling. They pass along every bird that hatches as "buff laced Brahmas". Enjoy your bird, just accept it for what it is. A Pretty bird, a wonderful pet, an excellent backyard layer.

Definitely! She's beautiful whatever color she is. Just was curious if she darkened because she's my first brahma and when i searched photos on line of buff laced brahmas, what i saw didn't look like her. She's great and i don't have an all white chicken so Lorraine fits the role.
Thanks for the info.

Are you still persuing your white project Big Med? Theh are gorgeous birds.

Sjisty thats a good start for 1st gen. 2nd gen should be even better!

No, never was. In fact they were not genetically white, just splash that gave the impression of being white.

I got 8 LB's chicks from TSC yesterday. These are sort of a test. I'm getting breeder chicks in around 3 months. So I want to compare the two. This way I can accurately show and tell people the difference of the two. Plus I just coudn't wait. LOL. I can tell already between the chicks. The pictures I've seen of breeders chicks have a lot more feathers on there legs compared to these.

These are the ones I got from TSC yesterday.

So Take away the comb, the leg feathers and size and you get a Silver Plymouth Rock ?
How where they made . i mean i do see a lot of similarities.

Might have been a little short with my Starsky and Hutch car photo comparison reply.

If a person is mostly familier with hatchery birds I could see where this could be confusing. Most hatcheries produce birds that have some of the main breed characteristics. Something approaching proper comb, leg color, leg feathering, feather color/pattern. But what often happens, these accessories are placed on a very generic built body type. Swap out the breed specific trim, and there is not much difference between hatchery Rocks, Wyandottes, Orphintons, Brahmas.......

Puts me in mind of an episode of The Simpsons I saw, where the family went to the food court at the mall. They were looking at all the vastly varied ethnic foods they had to choose from. They then showed a pull a way shot of the guts of the operation. Each of the food booths was piped to a central meat distribution system, pumping out the same common mystery meat to each booth, where they then tried to make it different than the other booths.

As has been stated here many times, there is a night and day difference between most hatchery, and show type stock. Comparing different breeds of properly built birds would give you a much better appreciation of their differences, which what I was trying to convey with the car photos.

Quote: Big Medicine, I am so new to this breed i am just learning standard and Look . I think mainly it was the color that threw me .I did not mean it bad i was actually thinking that they might of used the Brahma . I have my first 3 where culls from show stock and my next 4 are Really Beautiful specimens of the breed i was given a book to study but it is an older book for the Breeds old copy when i looked the book up thinking i can get one maybe 20 or 30 bucks i find the book in my hands was more like 1500 Rare hard to get bu recent copies i took it Back to Roy as I have cats and was scared to get it ruined . anyway i just need to learn standard and study some birds go to shows as i did with my pixie bobs and learn to get an eye for what i want and what i am doing . Pictures are hard to learn By. Thank you though as you have already taught me so Much and i love the Car Comparison , Tammy

Biggest difference between hatchery and breeder birds coloring is the "cleanness" I feel. While even showbirds are not perfectly colored especially the complicated color patterns they don't have near as much meshing of colors and misplaced coloring. I always feel like color lines is show birds are much more stark.

I'm sure you are correct. I just think the complete lack of type in "MOST" hatchery birds is the more serious fault. There is a glossary in both standards. The definition of "Breed" is in both. Its hard for me to place a bird in a specific breed if it lacks that breed's characteristics. The APA SOP even includes "and when mated together produce offspring with those same characteristics" in it's definition. Many birds marketed and sold as "Brahmas" fall far short of that. Color/variety is a whole other subject really. My point is more specific to type.
