We have 8 light brahmas that are 6 days old, and hubby has been very busy building their coop. I've read so many conflicting things about brahmas and their roosting habits that I don't know what to do about their roosts. Right now the lowest roost is about 3 feet off the floor. My climate is super cold, so I was thinking they should have a roost that's pretty high up where it will be warmer in winter. A friend of mine has Brahmas and they roost on top of her wood pile, about 4-5 feet up. Should we add a roost just off the floor?

If they are hatchery stock then since they are lighter framed they use perch bars much more frequently. You could add them and what's the worst that could happen. They don't use them. Who cares I would just add them and if they use them they use them if they don't then oh well lesson learned.

Can anyone tell me if the large Brahmas roost, mine is very large and 5 months old. I have lowered some roost, but she doesnt fly up. Also she looks like she will be too big for my 12x12 hen houses, will a wooden box with straw be alright for her.
I think you meant 12x12 nesting boxes, my brahmas still use my regular nesting boxes, but you could put a milk crate in filled with straw if you want her to feel more comfortable while laying.

Hello, I have a few Buff Brahma's that are around 7 weeks old and fully feathered. My question is should the males combs be getting redish.

Never had anything other than single combs so wondering.

Thanks, Herman

This is my sweet Lil Dark Brahma I just got, I named her Bone and she's so inquisitive and smart!!!

Re: nesting and roosting. Our LBs use milk crates filled w/ shredded paper to lay in and they're quite happy w/ this arrangement. Ten pullets use 3 boxes and one area on the floor w/ shredded paper and a 2'x4" frame that keeps everything contained.
Roosting. We have five that roost and six that pile in the darkest corner of the coop, including the cockerel. They pile around, under and on top of him. The perches the five roost on are about 2' off the ground. Again, they're pretty happy w/ their arrangement.

boy the brahma babies seem to be growing so fast lol and man do they eat... the information about roosts for later has been a helpful discussion .
