this is her, she looks kind of chocolate here but she is red. After you said that I do see the partridge look but I was going for more of the dark look but red in color

New to Brahma's and hatched out 4 buff brahma's from eggs.

First question at 8 to 9 weeks old should their combs be showing red if they are lil roo's?

Do Brahmas make good mothers? Broody?

Thanks, Herman

1) You will probably be able to make some guesses by then on who's who.
2) This is completely based on what lines you have. Mine have yet go broody but some people have them going broody like crazy.
Glad to see you got some Brahmas!

Thanks will email the person I got the eggs to hatch.

Think they are all hens as they are not showing any red or much growth in the combs.....

Thanks again, Herman

I currently have a Lemon Blue Cochin rooster and would like to cross him with a Gold Laced Brahma. Anyone have any idea what the color might be produced? I crossed him with two Dark Brahma hens and out of 6 eggs, 4 hatched blue and 2 hatched black. All chicks have black legs.

Should I take the Cochin/Dark Brahma females and cross them with a Dark Brahma rooster?
A Cross Breed Just kidding
Probably pretty

Intellectually I think I know the answer to this question, but just to confirm. Vulture hocks are dominant gene, and if your males have them no matter how nice the rest of the bird is, and your hens don't have them, breeding from those birds is still a huge mistake yes?

Edit: While asking questions about said trait, at 8 weeks there's no chance of them molting out of it or anything right?

I gotta say, much better birds than I expected. I think maybe you avatar was coloring my expectations.
Yeah he isn't the best I have but I am only keeping him because he has a decently wide head and so do the hens I have him on. My other birds heads aren't as wide as those three so I wanted to keep them together so I could really widen up their heads and then go on to do it with the rest. Him and his lady friend(s) will be in my freezer after this season. Out with the old in with the new. The one I might keep for showing because she has show colors( no smutty coloring ) and good type.

I have a question completely unrelated to this and it may sound dumb but I need it answered. For next year's science fair project I'm seeing if ACV really does improve the ratio of females to males. I already started by hatching out some chicks to see what the ratio is before the ACV. I need to know is gender of the chick decided once the egg is fertilized?
