So, if I bred this cockerel with blue/gold pullets I would get 50% that look like the hens and 50% that look like the cockerel? I actually like the cockerel's coloring better, I'm just worried that he maybe has vulture hocks and I don't think I want to breed that in. The pullet's hocks look fine to me, but I'm a beginner at this so I'm not sure about either one. His hocks may just look different to me because his feathering is darker.
I may have missed the answer to this question...I am also new at brahma breeding and would appreciate someone with more experience explaining the hock feathers - I have trouble seeing "vulture hocks" - thanks

Look at the "knees" on this little guy. Do you see the feathers hanging off to the rear? Those are vulture hocks.

Now look at this guy. No feathers sticking out on his hocks, although he could use some more feathering on his lower legs and feet.

Thank you so much Sjisty - these are very descriptive photos. I finally understand!! And my chicks will be thankful as I can stop inspecting their hocks now

[I can't remember who asked, but...]
I don't have a problem w/my Brahma roo picking on any of the smaller chickens. We only have 1 Brahma and a lot of EE, polish (std), cochins (std & bnt), NN's, silkies, RIR's most are still only 2-4 mos old. He doesn't mess w/them at all. He's so loving and gentle and when you hold him and scratch him he nestles his head/neck down and closes his eyes and slightly opens his beak. My husband said we should get rid of all the chickens and just get brahmas! LOL! We plan to order a variety of eggs adn I have an idea of 2 people I want to order some from, just waiting for a better paycheck to do it. (you know how THAT goes)

OK question anyone chime in but I know Tim will know. Is the ABA the bantam group I want to join? We were thinking of going to the Dec. show in knoxville but unsure as to if this was a good association.

The American Bantam Association is great. You don't have to be a member to show, but you do have to have your birds NPIP tested. If you do it for your flock you just need to take your current certification card with you to the show. If you are not NPIP there will be testers at the show. All birds must be tested. Usually there are testers at the show buildings if you coop in the evening before the show and the morning of the show before the show starts.

What diseases do you test for in NPIP?

The diseases tested is dependant upon the subpart. Each Subpart tests for different diseases. Some of the diseases tested for in the NPIP program are:
I was certified I bought Certified and Still got MG so this is a joke i am sorry but the cert is only as good as the people

I highly recommend the ABA. I am a proud member. Different states have differnt requirements to enter their shows. I am not nor have I ever been NPIP tested/certified. Texas requires typhoid/pulorim(sp?) and has state inspectors that come to your house to test your birds for free. You need to check with exhibitors in your state to find out what is required. Shows include health/testing requirements in their show catalog. Not sure what Tennessee requires.

Tim

P.S. sorry I don't have over 11,000 posts on BYC.

Tim, I think maybe you got your posters switched up there.

I'm an NPIP participant, but don't figure on it to keep my birds from catching something. That's on me, if possible.
