Not sure. Gary would know. The standard defines VHs as"stiff" or hard shafted, can't recall exactly as its not in front of me. There are soft VHs which are not quite as big a deal. Just depends on whos judging.

Actually this is kind of a grey area for me, I have always treated any degree of vulture hocks like the plague, it's all bad.

I can tell you that the full blown type A vulture hocks, for lack of a better name, show themselves at a much earlier age. They become apparent about the same time a chick shoots it's first primary feathers. The softer vulture hock lite type is sneakier showing itself.

I have a little (well not little anymore!) chick that when I posted photos as a hatchling (about a week old) here was told had really clear (incredible was the word used

) VH. I will get pics tomorrow to show how prominent they can be! While this is just my backyard flock and I don't really have an intent on breeding (also none seem to be cockerels, good for the new city laws), it is a VERY clear example of the problem. The 2 siblings to this bird do not show the trait, but again, this is my pretty backyard layer flock, all they have to do is eat the bugs and weeds I pull from the garden, look good, and lay eggs.

Gary: since you raise LF Brahmas I thought I'd ask you. I talked to two people who raise Brahmas and they said that the 17% layer feed is no good and one of them feeds a chick starter and one feeds a grower to their breeders. Is a chick/grower combo that is nonmedicated a bad idea?

ETA: Never mind I figured it out.

I love Brahmas. I have a slew of many breeds, but I will always have the spot in my heart for my Brahma ladies. :)

Here is one of my Dark Brahma hens.

My 'retired' Light Brahma hen before she passed away.

Four of the Dark Brahma chicks when they were a few days old.

A couple of Dark Brahmas at the water. (Due to it being -15 outside, my heated water even froze, so they were without water and crowded when they got their water.)

Lovely seeing all the fancy, feather-footed fowl. :)

Okay, just wanted to share. Went out today and snapped some shots. But had to post my favorites.

Sisters, Lacy and Lacie. Always together.
As chicks

As pullets

As Hens

Here is my GL Brahma update on the one with VERY clear VH. One from behind and one from the side, sorry that one of the other GL Brahmas is in the second side photo. These are right at 6 months old.

:yiipchick loving our Brahmas.they are the most docile hens and chicks we have ever owned.
