at a young age a fault is about the only thing I look for in Brahmas. I keep the young much longer than most as sometime the slow to mature turn out alright. They must not have any major faults or I will not let them mature.

I look at type FIRST. feather quality second, and color third. I posted a photo of a three month old buff male. He has a wide skull, good width from front to back, and super wide feathers, espesially in his tail. He has not gotten all his adult feathers yet. As we previously discussed, the buffs are much slower to get their adult plumage. I have witnessed myself that MOST judges will take a super typey bird over a super colored bird in most cases. I'm not saying color is not important(it is)...I just think it is less important than type. I think Don may have a little different take on this.

The photos are on page 44 of this thread.

Tim, I have to say that I look at the over all Brahma. As you know when I am showing I raise large numbers of chicks so I have a large number to pick from when I go to the show. Once you see a Judge a few times you will know what he or she is looking for in a Brahma. They are definatly not all equal. Now that I plan on only showing at a few shows each year. I will only show if I like the Judge at the show. I do not have money to waste on a judge I do not like.

Tim, I will say this and that is that most Judge can not see past a big headed Brahma regardless if it is junk other than a big head. The old saying goes if they aren't good raise them large and you will do ok.

Thats true Don. Greg told me once someone told him, "if you can't be better-be bigger." I also understand what you mean by the over-all Brahma. I'm sure you are familiar with the old saying among fanciers, " you need to build the barn(or fence) before you paint it." I want my Brahmas to be colored perfectly. I just want to concentrate on type FIRST. Once that is right, I hope to fine tune the color, resulting in the "over all Brahma". At last years national, the judge was named Jamie something.( I can't remember his last name! he is Canadian) He commented that the champion bird, a Spence/Williams light bantam, was not perfect in color. He said the type was so correct, it was the best bird.(that may not be his exact words, that was my understanding of his comments) Conversly, Greg told me the color of my lights was outstanding. He went on to say that they lacked the"powerful build" a brahma should have. There were several mammoth headed birds at Shawnee, and none of them placed very well. I don't think he(judge Jamie) was impressed by just a big head. You may be familiar with the judge I'm speaking of?

As a side note on the "Big head" subject. Don't big(wide) headed birds usually carry the width through-out the back? I may be way off on this. It just seems like the wide headed birds I have seen do have good back width.

Gosh, I have missed this!

Here is the Light pullet That Spence/Williams won with at the national at Shawnee last December. This is the judge who's name I could not remember, his jacket says CARSON! His name is Jamie Carson from Canada.

Notice the well spread inverted "U" tail on the pullet-just like the standard calls for.

Thats a prime example of type. Nice Pictures.

By the way, do we know who the judge is for the Brahmas; at fowl fest?

Light Brahma are usually smaller framed unless they have been crossed with the Buff to improve the type. The only new blood I have added to my Buff is some that I bought from Don Emery several year ago. His brahma were noted for the large head and the big U shaped tail. One thing to remember is that the big head and U shaped tail can disappear just as fast as it appeared in the first place. we can start the Brahma in detail in a few days.
