It's a sad day here.

Yesterday I noticed my Brahma rooster had his wings drooping and overall looked kind of down. I gave them all electrolytes, Vitamin B, probios, and egg to help perk him up. He ate normally and otherwise didn't have any problems.

Today I found him upside down in the nest box, they trip over their large feet all the time and I knew he was probably weak and couldn't get himself out after he fell in. I sat him back on the floor and he was falling over. All I said was Oh dear God then rushed to the house to get some more vitamins in an attempt to do something. I got back 2 minutes later and his eyes were closed. He died in my arms within moments.

Words can not explain my loss. I drove 20 hours for that big booger. I didn't have him but a few months but I loved his personality and the fact remains with only hens there will be no light babies born on this farm. All my waiting and work to get SQ brahmas gone.

I was actually going to use the lights for other projects and luckily I do have other roosters from those projects. But I am still so upset that I will have no more pure lights. I have no idea how I will get ahold of another rooster of equal splender. I can't go pick another up at this time, and she has no more. Maybe this fall or next year.

Pray for me that the 4 hens he was with start laying fertile eggs in the next few days and I can hatch out another little boy. That is my only hope at this moment.

I'm so sorry - every time I hear about this happening, the pain of losing mine comes right back. It's always the special ones, isn't it? I've been looking for LF SQ lights for over a year, so I can imagine how painful this must be.

Must have been the day for it, very similar occurance here with the light cockerel I had picked up last fall to head up my blue columbian breeding pen. So I too find myself in need of a good light male large fowl. The youngster I lost never did develop as much skull as I would have liked.

Thank you all for the kind words pertaining to my silver laced birds.

Weird.... I was for my blue columbian pen too. Well hopefully we will both come up with something.

Working on a new set of breeding pens for Spring and the fences for our turn out paddocks this weekend. I found a shed with no roof on a forclosed property and called about it, the land owner gave it to me. Perfect weekend project for me. A few posts, some wood planks and time and it will be a nice weekend.

My Darks have FINALLY started laying so I have started collecting Partridge and Dark eggs for the incubator.

Any chicks planned in the next few weeks?
