Do you have the Lights yet, or are you going to wheedle some of those from Chad's that were at Shawnee?????

I am getting a female from him, and I am sending one of our Dark females to a lady here in Texas to put her Light male on. Its Txaggie from the Brahma forum. She is a genetics expert. If Chad will take it, I will send a Dark female to him as well to put in with his Mark Petersen male he got at Crossroads. Mike Gilbert told me this might take three or four generations, possibly more. It would be awesome to have Large Darks with the type the large Lights have.

Thats what I have heard Gary. I think they were dispersed widely. There were no really good ones to speak of at Crossroads. It seems like the large lights are king now. The birds I have now may trace back to Barb's. I got my eggs from Carole DeJarnatt, In Florida who got her birds from Susan Nicolas, who I BELIEVE got hers from Barb years ago. Somewhere along the line the tails have diminished a bit.

I don't think so, from my understanding, Carole wasn't sire if the hen from Susan ever laid, so she got hens elsewhere. When I bought caroles birds, I only kept the birds she got from Susan, the others I sold as layers...they looked more hatchery stock to me.

Question to those of you with LF Brahmas that free-range or have uncovered runs- Have you had any Hawk attacks on the full grown Brahmas?
I have all huge uncovered runs (they get locked in coops at night) and rotationally free-range groups in 3 horse fields- do I need to be concerned about hawks?
Thanks!

You don't have to worry no more about hawks with 1 breed then with another. A hawk will attempt to attack a large fowl bird just as fast as they will a bantam if they are hungry enough.

Brahmas though are going to be the last on the list of birds to attack though because of their sheer size. My brahma rooster weights about 13 lbs. A hawk will know the brahmas are much to big to attempt to attack and carry off, but if hungry enough any predator will act outside of their safe zone.
