(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes! We are brand new!
A group of chickens has been visiting our property, scratching up bugs, and waiting for the lawn to get cut. They come almost every day. It was always a group of hens, but in January or so a rooster started coming with the rest. We don't mind them coming and even enjoy seeing them.
A few weeks ago we found one of the chickens alone, huddled under our rose bush, all bloodied under both sides of her wings. Besides the visible injuries, it was really odd for her to be at our house alone and at dusk. Later, we went to check on her and she was gone. The next day she came on our patio and we gave her water and food. That's when she started sleeping on our patio table. We brought out our cat carrier and she went right in, finally getting some sleep. Fast forward a couple weeks, and we now have a coop on our porch and a happy, healthy hen that lays crazy large eggs!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
One chicken that adopted us and one new young chicken which we bought yesterday from a farmer's market.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have no idea what their breeds are!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google! I needed information and support to help us be good chicken people. Plus our new chicken has a scissor beak, which we didn't notice, nor were we looking for that issue, at the market.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a maker, so I enjoy all kinds of crafty things from painting and knitting to jewelry making and writing. My family are backyard birders and enjoy creating a safe and healthy environment for our wild bird friends.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
