Sometimes Peas are not as smart as we would like them to be. I have/had numerous Rottweilers and my Peas will stand their ground and be nose to nose with the dogs. Luckily we train the dogs from babies to not mess with the birds, otherwise we would have lost many Peas this way. They seem to think they are every bit as big and tough as the dogs.

If something tries to get him in the middle of the night, you may hear nothing, we have gone out in the dark many times to candle eggs under Peahens and even to move birds from one pen to another, seldom do they make much noise other than a nervous clucking you would never hear in the house.

Very nice pen! Now you just need some company for your pea-baby

Personally, I wouldn't use cinder blocks or bricks in a pen, because I would be worried about pea feet... Not only do the blocks get cold, but they are abrasive, and I would be worried about scratches or minor foot injuries. The problem with scratches and minor foot injuries is that they can lead to bumblefoot or an abscess in the bird's foot which can cripple or kill a bird, if not caught and treated in time.

I'm always looking at my bird's feet just to make sure there's no bumps or odd looking places when I check my birds or hang out by the pen, just as part of my "how are they doing today" kinda visual scans...

Maybe you could do a nice stump like MinxFox planted in her pen?

Your pen looks really nice -- great job

Funny you mentioned that, this last weekend my wife brought up that subject... she wants to get a couple of chicken hens for his company and some eggs.
I asked her to do some research first on what kind of chickens and how many would be best. We plan to let him out in the spring to "range" a little and was hopping those hens might keep him a little closer or even bring him back into the cage at night.

I've been putting his favorite food(kitten food) right now in a cup in the area under the roof with the straw so he will at least inspect this area.
I did find him mostly under the roof the other day when we had a cold rain.
One note, I put the 1x6 board on top of some of the 2x4 running across the pen thinking he would prefer to have a wide board like that to sit on and I have yet to see him sitting on that part of the perch. He'll walk over it to get to the food I've put under the roof, but not stop and sit on it.

When he gets his train you will need to widen his pen as he will not be able to clear the platform and land without hitting the side, i figure for every foot up a pea is it needs 3 feet flying out to land properly so 3 x 6 = 18 feet, i have watched my peas fly down from different heights in the trees and noticed just how far they went before the touched down.
Here is a peacock flying down starting @ 2:30 on the video to give you an idea what i was talking about

yea I figured that time will come about the time we let him range in the spring. he's got about 1ft of train right now.
I've seen him get off the perch many time and he always goes to the far corner with the air brakes on. We built this so we can expand it out to the left of the picture with some more fence panels, but want to see how it all works out before putting in more time into this project.

Sounds good i love those fence panels i have a bunch of them and i can change the pens up so much easrer than trying to run fence.

This was for my silver pieds i ordered but that ain't gonna happen now so i guess it will remain vacant till next year when i can try again for some babies

I made a guinea trap and caught 318 in less than a week

I also like to use them as progressing pens where i can hen the babies up in the secondary opening in the evening and not have the older peas go into the brooder with them

It gets MUCH harder to maneuver as the tail gets longer. He'll be grateful (and much less likely to break his neck) if you expand before he starts running into the panels
