Bread Can Kill or hotdogs???

I see no problem feeding crickets....not sure why they say no. All chickens forage for their food when opporunity arises.

Yep I feed my chickens, bread and hotdogs on rarest occasions. Its the salt contents you have to worry about but a once a blue moon wont hurt them. Be sure to provide grits.

if the bread is underbaked, as home baked, the yeast hitting the warm chicken stomach may cause it to expand and possibly swell up the chicken. I feed mine bread a lot--they love it. make sure it is baked and not underbaked at all. similar with dogs. this is probally where your brother got that idea!

I may be wrong but anyone or any animal that eats raw yeast, it would not survive in the stomach acid which it would break it down. Thats my guess!

thanks for all the advice sorry for not replying! I had an Ice hockey game this weekend and i also was at a friends so i couldn't reply. I think the whole thing with the cricket is that they were chicks and just like human babies they cannot handle solid food other than that feed you have to get for them just like baby formula. I have anther question

1.) If chickens eat poop from another animal can they get worms or stuff like that. like how dogs and cats get worms?? ( sorry thats a gross question but I was currious)

by the way if your wondering we lost our hockey games

Bummer about the game!

As for getting worms, it can happen but is more likley they'll get parasites from the soil.

Many farmers allow/encourage chickens to scratch in the cow manure. The spread the manure and break it down more quickly than a patty will on its own.

Re: the cricket question... some feed store/pet store crickets are gut loaded (fed high amounts of certain vitamins and nutrients) to make them more nutritious for the lizards that are the usual reciepients of the crickets. Maybe Ideal is erring on the side of caution when they say no to them, so you won't feed a chick something they shouldn't have, like too much calcium.

Hey hun! Go to tractor Supply, or your local Farm Co-op and get a metal waterer, and a battery operated heat-base for it! If they don't have em, look on-line at any poultry supply place!

A little pricey-- but worth knowing they always have thawed water!

I'm pretty sure he's thinking of why you don't throw rice at weddings anymore. The birds can't digest and it kills them. My orp loves bread, she goes nuts everytime I go outside cause she thinks she's getting our stale bread.

In fact guy I got my orp from buys stale bread products from a bread/treat company by the truckload to help his feed last longer. I think he said its about half and half. Probably not the healthiest thing in the world, but whatever works I guess.

Hot Dogs? Well I have heard that if chickens can get ahold of mice they will tear them apart! About the bread. I have always been afraid to give mine bread unless it is home made. Store bought bread is enriched with diff. things. Not sure if that matters though. Just feed only and alot of greens my RiR's get.
