Breast blisters and cut up wing tips

Thank you all for the advice, I am about to clean eddies wound.. I am sending pictures of eddies poops which happened within a minute of each other. The first one had a good amount of grit in it. Would you recommend poly vi sol with or without iron?

You sure are a very kind chicken mom to your Eddie !!

More challenging: inactive means easy weight gain & more painful to walk, Right?
Feed the nerves that feed the muscles (for animals and humans) !

The B Complex (you do now). Snacks: I learned no more than 1-2 TBSP per day. Sesame Seeds, unsalted of course, for Selenium. Banana for Magnesium & Potassium. But, as she is aged, her digestive system is slowed too. So small portions when eating.

You might try Poly-Vi-Sol, liquid minerals and vitamins (in the baby med section) These are a great source to help a weak hen. 3-5 drops (follow with drops of water to rinse the med taste) once a day for 5 days just to see if it makes a difference.

I have 2 types of arthitis. I'm in alot less pain when I use Trace Mineral Drops, eat small meals and snacks and eat foods that feed the nerves that feed the muscles. Good Luck.

Thank you for this!

Eddie doesn’t get treats often anymore but I will start giving small amounts of the things you mentioned.

I am ordering some today of the poly vi sol, I know I already asked this but would you recommend it with or without iron?

Would Trace Mineral Drops be something for chickens?
Thanks for the link too 😊

No, it would not, as they would not drink it if you were to put too much ACV in the water.

Once or twice a week should be o.k., but always provide fresh plain water as well, so they will be able to choose.
So if you are correct about renal or cancer... what’s the next step? I’m also deworming her if that affects it at all.

Poly-Vi-Sol without iron. I "Googled"are Trace minerals safe for hens. It said "water soluble"human vitamins and minerals are safe to give hens.

Well, as we all are different, we will have different approaches on how to deal with the situation you describe in your post dated November 25th, 2021.

I have an almost 9 year old hen named Eddie. She has arthritis, to the best of my knowledge, and has trouble walking around. I am with her for most of the day but that doesn't stop the tips of her wings from being scuffed up. Because she has such a hard time walking, she flaps her wings constantly, and they rub against the sand or wire of her cage constantly. This has caused her feathers to come off in that area, she is finishing up her molt and the feathers won't grow back in. I have been putting neosporin and other wound healers on her tips but it hasn't helped one bit. I even wrapped her wings in some wrap that is the sticky kind... I believe it is called vet wrap. That came off easily and I am at a loss. They aren't getting better and they still get bloody from the constant flapping. She comes inside into her 'wheelchair' a lot but it doesn't help her wings even though she isn't flapping.
  • Eddie is already 9 years old
  • has trouble walking to the point of needing her wings constantly to help
  • her wings getting bloody due to the constant flapping
  • lost the feathers that will not grow back
  • no treatment helped so far to heal the bloody wings
  • despite all your efforts, she developed a keel wound with "lots of pus" that you are trying to treat but does not heal.
the curled toes
  • curled toes can be caused by a lot of things, such as vitamin deficiency, worms, Marek's Disease, ALV, internal laying, cancer etc. Since September 2021 you treated her for the third time for worms, so they rather are not the cause.
  • Eddie spends a lot of her time in a wheel chair inside as she is unable to get around by herself.
As far as I gathered from your other threads, for about the last months you have experienced a lot of deaths in your flock and hens suffering from ascites etc. which might hint to an underlying bacterial or rather viral issue in your flock.

Your chickens are pets (or so it seems to me), as you appear to go all the way with all kinds of treatments etc. no matter what.

You will not like it, but for me the next step would be

to put Eddie out of her ongoing and progressing misery and send her in for necropsy to find out exactly what you are dealing with in your flock.

Although I do have some very old pet chickens as well and in case of accidents (hawk injuries or similar) will treat them to the best of my abilities, I will rather end their suffering than force them to live a life I consider an imposition and which would leave them to vegetate.

I do understand that it sometimes can be very hard to bring oneself to the decision, but I consider it the last friendly turn to end their suffering when there is obviously no reasonable hope for their recovery and no way they will be able to live a happy and normal chicken life again.

Well, but that's just me.

So a few questions,
first @Wyorp Rock , I usually give vitamins like B12 one day then poultry cell the next day then take a break for a week and then give those things again the next week. I also give Eddie things like turmeric and shigru for arthritis. I am fine with giving the anti inflammatories but am I giving vitamins too often?

Eddie seems to have a 'fat pad'. It is on the bottom of her keel bone, instead of keel bone, it is really a fat pad protecting her keel bone. It is pretty thick. I rarely give treats either. Is this actually a fat pad and is there anything I can do to make it reduce in size? I do give less than 3 mL of yogurt mixed with turmeric 5 days out of the week but I doubt this could cause it.

And then Eddie's skin on her face is shedding, I think it is normal, I will take a picture later but her skin is coming off in very small bits and it's basically shedding. Why is it doing this?

Florida is getting hot again, I think we are mainly done with cold weather. Eddie is panting again. So when I went to the vet, the vet noticed how many feathers Eddie has, like Eddie was protecting herself from the cold, but it's Florida so now it is getting very hot and she is panting like crazy. I have her in the porch with fans on her which helps a lot but is there anything else I can do? She is drinking lots of water.
I don't want to have to keep her in the porch for months just because it is hot.
