Breda Fowl thread

Hurray! They're here -- Blue Breda juvenile pullets from chicken danz! I wanted to take dozens of photos but left them alone to get acclimated -- they are beautiful deep blue with great lacing already! One girl has lost her tail feathers -- too docile around other breeds but that's okay with me! Feathers grow back! These girls are so-o-o calm. DH has adjusted things in their kennel a couple times and they don't even flutter. They will complain when disturbed but do it very calmly. We're so happy to have Blue's again!
There so light blue colored that's cool

Sylvester my incubator was messed up with the humidity readings, thank you for that link!!

Breda are so different from more common breeds I always wonder if the recommendations apply to Breda breeding -- but then, what do I know? Someone was having a hard time hatching eggs on another thread and someone posted the UC Agricultural info so I figured it's worth trying. Anything to keep these lovely Breda around! Breda aren't the only rare breed having troubles with fertility, incubating, pipping/hatching, or mortality issues. I'm on the Bielefelder and Pita Pinta (No Calif) threads and people were having hatching issues too.

We are so thrilled with our new ones it was all we could do to keep our hands off of them their first tired day! We're leaving their kennel door open tomorrow to see if they venture out. Our prior Blue Breda pullet a couple years ago was curiously walking around the house her first day right out of the shipping box.

The contrast between the dark and light on the lacing looks promising. The girl we had a couple years ago looked like these new pullets and she had lovely lacing:

Our first girl as a chick I wasn't too sure about her feather coloring. Blue chicks are hard to tell before adult feathers come in.

Later as a juvenile she looked more promising

By the time she reached adult her feathers were individually defined with nice edging and dark hackles.

These new babies are the youngest Breda juvies I ever had so coloring will be wait and see but they look a lot like my prior Blue girl. The darker the head the better the edging/lacing seems to be as adults.

As for the vulture hocks, the Cuckoo Breda seem to have that arena perfected!

The 9 today. There are definitely 2 cockerals in the bunch, with a possible 2 more. I'm hoping the remaining 5 are hens

They started hatching today I day late probably because of the electricity going out anyway I candled the ones that aren't trying to break out and out of the 18 eggs 4 aren't fertile and 1 died during development there's one that had hatching problems not sure if he will make it or not two heathy ones have hatched for sure I know I raised my humidity to 70 % because they were drying out before they hatched out

so I ended up with 9 total 2 I hope isn't gonna end up with spraddle leg there walking funny anyway 7 are really healthy so basically a 50% hatch rate 4 more would of hatched but died during development if I had to guess they probably died the day the electricity went out overall the best hatch iv had on shipped eggs

You got 9 like me!!the 2 with spraddke feet shoukd clear up in a few days. Do you have paper towels or puppy training pads in the brooder? That will help the 2 with their legs . After 2 weeks I switch to shavings. Plus in the beginning it's easier to clean up paper towels or training pads lol.
