Breda Fowl thread

I just got 18 mottled eggs from RFR, so in a few weeks I should have lots of little dino baby photos to share. :wee

Hurray! More baby pics to see soon!

Here's more of my new Blue Breda baby. She has grown in some nice feathers and her wattles have finally started to show. I don't know if I'm in love with the Blue color or if I love the color because these Breda are so incredibly sweet. But then, my Cuckoo Breda is a sweetie too! These are fantastic all-round non-combative flockmates, layers, and family-friendly pets.

So beautiful! My mottled are growing like weeds - will be moving them to a larger coop soon - then more pics :)
Sadly 2 of my black/splash Bredas dropped dead on Thursday, so am awaiting necropsy results.....:(

Yep, no use beating ourselves up over Breda losses. They can have a tendency to drop off with no rhyme or reason at any age but the first 4 months I believe are the most critical. I mean, I was shipped two beautiful Breda juveniles and lost one less than a week later. But then, I've lost other shipped juvenile breeds so who knows what, if any kind of stress, affects them during shipping. The electrolytes, vitamins, and turkey grow are my best supplements and I always have fecal tests done for cocci and worms on new juvies. They can be a delicate breed. I would've given up on Breda a while back if they hadn't turned out to be the best darn breed I've ever had. I am optimistic with anything over a 50% survival rate with these beauties because they are so worth it. My Cuckoo Breda resumed her daily laying again - actually got a 2.25 oz egg from her the other day but realistically she usually gives 2-oz eggs. I'm grateful that she takes broody breaks between laying cycles because I lost my Blue Breda hen after she started laying as a pullet and continued for 10+ straight consecutive months -- that's just too much stress on a hen's body plus it was a very brutal heatwave when she succumbed.

Hope the rest of your juvies do okay. Let us know if the necropsy turns up anything.

Breda can be delicate as chicks and sometimes as late as 2 years old. Just never know. So far I've been pleased with our Cuckoo Breda's health. Of all our Breda she's the only one that never had respiratory issues. With those cavernous nostrils of theirs it's rare that they don't get sniffles or sneezes. My Blue girl seems to sneeze after eating her crumbles that kicks up some dust. I haven't had a Mottled yet so can't testify to their issues.

I have never, in all my years of raising chickens, seen chicks hatch as fast as these Breda chicks have.

Pics? Anyone?

My Cuckoo Breda is molting and being reclusive and our humid weather is making my newest Blue Breda lethargic.

Anyone else having heat issues?
