Breda Fowl thread

I have lots of Mottled in eggs, chicks, and some young adults (several roosters). Shipping fine. NPIP ranch. Contact me on Facebook at Rare Feathers Ranch or email [email protected]. I am not in here all that much. I also run an auction of eggs on EBay almost weekly.

Glad you're keeping the thread informed! We're a Breda-loving group of people here and you're one of a few that's great to deal with!

Glad you are keeping that info out there for us and so glad Dutch is keeping a breeding flock going. The more individual breeding flocks available in the USA the better chance for diversity and individual lines. The Breda are so-o-o worth it. Other than their fabulous temperament here is another reason for their worthiness: As of today since our Cuckoo Breda started laying, she has given us eleven XL eggs in 13 days! Some eggs are missing in the skelter since we sent my DS home w/ some fresh eggs for his breakfast! I plan to make a quiche w/ these beauties! Has anyone else got XL eggs from their Breda pullets? I can't believe the SIZE of these eggs! She is such a tall slim Cuckoo I wasn't expecting such big eggs!
Those are pretty good sized eggs your getting for a pullet I bet she'll lay some really nice big sized Eggs when she's full grown I hope the cuckoo I'll be getting from Dutch connection will be a hen I'm curious to see what color egg shell lay cause I know some hens lay white then some brown and some that lay pinkish white

We had excellent production from our Blue Breda too -- she layed 5 to 6 eggs/week for 10+ consecutive months before heatwave issues took her from us

-- however, the Blue never layed bigger than 1.75-oz eggs. She was a shorter, smaller variety than our taller Cuckoo pullet. I hope the Cuckoo stays at 2 to 2.25-oz eggs. I can't imagine such a lightweight slender bird laying anything larger. I worry about reproductive issues. She has been extra hungry laying such big eggs so we don't mind feeding her to replace her body nutrients!

here's some of the Breda chicks that I hatched this year that's out of my grown stock

Lovely! Lovely! Lovely! So glad to see Blues -- Blacks are stunning too but our brutal summer sun bleaches our shiny Black Silkie to rust every summer so unless our summers tame down I'll hold off getting any Black Breda.

Black Silkie turns to rust from our brutal summer sun

As she molts her shiny black fur replaces the rust-color

Cuckoo Breda and Black Silkie

Note: In 17 days our Cuckoo Breda has layed 15 LG-XL eggs! Breda are such prolific layers! The Black Silkie doesn't want to be outdone -- she's layed 3 eggs in 4 days and she's almost 6-yrs-old!

You should consider getting a splash Breda or a mottled then if u want different colors

Yes, I'm considering all the possibilities. I love Breda so much they can be purple for all I care - haha! I would love a Blue/White Mottled but only one breeder I know has them but I don't want to use that breeder. I'm keeping my options open and have a Blue Breda on order currently. Even though our last Blue layed MED eggs rather than LG/XL she was still a very prolific layer too. Any color of Breda or egg color is always fine because I LUV their temperament and production. So far, the best darn chicken breed I've had in 65 yrs! The best production birds I had were Leghorn but their temperament left a lot to be desired when around docile chickens. The Breda is such a nice non-combative flockmate that is also a terrific egg-layer. I love their pesty people-friendly personality. I'm sure like with all chicken breeds a "lemon" personality can emerge but so far I haven't experienced it in our Breda and we've got them from different sources.

There's only two mottled breeders I know and one is Dutch connection and the other is rare feathers ranch didn't you get your cuckoo from rare feathers ranch how come you don't get a mottled from her

Well, hope my 'puter is ok now - darn 'puters!

I love working w/ RFR but they no longer carry the Blue or the Cuckoo -- my DH loves the Blue. I have a Blue pullet on order from @chicken danz this Spring to replace the Blue we lost last year. I stagger the ages of my birds so they don't get old all at once. Next Spring 2018 I'd like another pullet of unknown color and another in 2019 maybe if DH can manage 6 hens. My oldest is 6 yrs old - a Silkie - and she's pretty much done laying - she is my constant gardening companion, she loves to dig for worms while I'm working. I'm hoping someday someone can breed a Blue & White Mottled w/ a lot of Blue rather than a lot of White in the mottling.
