Breed Information

I got a very interesting email from a very knowledgeable source of the Heritage Breeds. The email has some promising leads.

"All this information can be found but your going to have to find the old publication of the 1940’s and 50’s. There was a publication call National Poultry Digest that gave out this information every month that your asking about. These would have been based on the genetics being used of these breeds at the time. Most of the genetics being sold today from hatcheries would be different. Most of the birds now our more eggs producers and not the real old type dual purposes breeds of the past. Leslie E. Card wrote a good book called Poultry Production 6th Edition 1952 that would share a lot about the information you are looking for. It was written for High School students. Let me know if I can help you more. "

Try as I might I could not find a 6th edition; I found a 7th edition copy of the Poultry Production Text...this 7th Edition book was not easy to find.

The National Poultry Digest document has a been a bit more challenging...if anyone finds a link...if there is an archive or PDF of this, a link would be much apprecaited.

I just followed the link...that data is from Ft Collins CO. There is an archive on the CSU campus...I'm doing research this summer at UNC and will be spending some time at CSU...

AWESOME LINK...thank you.

Since I last posted to this thread I have read a fairly good book on the subject: Poultry Breeding, 2nd Edition, by Morley A. Jull (1940)

Obviously the book is quite dated as to its understanding of genetics an traits, but the use of visual ques in the selection of breeders for flock improvement, breed improvement, is still very useful to the modern breeder of fine poultry.

There are other texts that I would place above this book. But if you are looking to complete a personal library on the subject...this book would make the list.
