Breeders Arrested in LA / Dead chickens in bedroom

I would have to say, I think they were hoarders. If they wanted a quick buck everything would have been in multiples. You cannot make money of a single mini horse and a single donkey. I do agree they may have started in for a fast buck, or the other way around: started out as hoarders and then trying to make a quick buck. Of course, the mini horse and donkey may have only been sole survivors.

Ugh, the whole thing is aweful, it reminds me of the puppymill/animal hoarders we broke up just a few miles from here.

Over 100 dogs in over 10 breeds. Three miniature horses(One DOA on our arrival) and two standard horses. I believe that was the only time I have ever technically stolen an animal. (The owners had left the state and left all the animals to starve. So yes stealing in the sense:took without permission, but not stealing in the sense: animals were considered abandoned and not owned. LOL)

If they were selling at swap meets they might of taken other animals in trade for the chickens thinking they could turn them over for some money. I so feel for those animals and cannot understand how someone can breed animals and then just let them die. This is truly awful!! It makes me sad and angry.

Unless you speak directly to these people we can only guess at why they had so many animals. But, I agree with some of the things said so far. They may have started off as getting a fast buck and even tried swap meets and were overwhelmed in no time by the sheer amount of animals they must have acquired in such a short time and then they started reproducing causing the numbers to keep jumping up.

We have hoarder laws for these cases but, they only can 'try' to discourage people from this kind of situation. Sadly that is all those laws can do. As long as they think they can get away with it or as said it starts out as a harmless intention of keeping pets that outgrows the people's means. There is very little anyone can do... I mean if you go asking to have people looked into just because you see a lot of animals in their yard you might wind up with upset neighbors who have only the amount of animals they can reasonably can care for. It's something that makes me feel a little helpless when these things go on.

The only thing that I can give advice about is for ourselves. If we feel overwhelmed with the amount of animals we have then it's time to trim down period.

I can't even think about having the decaying ones in the house! The fact that they were living with dead animals in the house disturbs me. Then again there have been cases of humans living with a decaying spouse or child or other relative. It just boogles my mind -how- anyone could live that close to anything decaying at such close quarters!

Many times these people have mental illness or dissabilities. Like the one elderly lady with the mental dissabilities in the news recently. Who was living in the same apartment where her dead sister was decaying in the kitchen. The lady only covered her sister with newspaper and went about her daily routine. The body was decaying so badly that the animals locked in the house, several dogs and cats, had begun eating it.
