Breeding a new chicken breed

I have just begun crossing Spitzhaubens for some hybrids I'm working on. The crest they pass on has been really beautiful and practical (i.e. never impedes vision). However, the V-comb hasn't worked out like I expected. Here is a post about that: multiple-comb-type-breeds. There is quite a bit of useful comb info on that thread.

Here are my most recent Spitz crosses: is-there-such-a-thing-as-brown-sex-link-using-barring-gene

Everything crossed with a Spitz has turned out really beautiful and predator savvy (which is the priority for my flock). Best of luck with your project!
Thanks for this! You have some beautiful Spitz roos!
I know from some info that the V comb is not completely dominant, so some of the offspring will have better combs in the F2.
I would have loved the offspring to have forward pointing crest from the start, but maybe I need that to be perfected rather 😀. As long as they don't have hernia and block vision, I guess that'll be satisfactory too. Waiting for your F2s. Regarding using legbars, maybe that affects crest shape too...?

Would love to update and be updated by you. Regards!

I've been thinking about the forward crest, too. I haven't been able to find any research, but I think it may have to do with the comb. All of my F1 combs have been more substantial than the small V-comb of the Spitz sire. I think the comb is pushing the crest back, so maybe once I get a true v-comb the crest might start to lean forward?

I have a couple Projects I'm working on myself.

Wheaten Crele Orpingtons, & Giant Silkies.
A couple side projects will be Rainbow Laying Silkies, & an Attack Chicken for coop security.

You're project sounds interesting. Wish you luck.

One question. How large do you want your breed to be?
That sounds interesting!
I've have a couple of medium sized Brahmas that are alert (atleast the roosters), 25" tall and around 8+ pounds. I'm guessing atleast that large. The bigger Brahma's I have are alert too, but slightly clumsy (not as clumsy as some heavy rocks or Cornish). Maybe it's their feathered legs. I need to see for sure. The Faverolles I had were alert and fast too (not extremely). They reached 7+ pounds. Getting my first batch of salmons today, along with a pair of Spitzhauben (found only one breeder in the whole country yet 😅)

Let's hope for that! (I've always noticed that polish crest genes get pushed back when the comb is single, which is why males have smaller crests).

My biggest Brahma hens are about 9lbs - 10lbs.

Feathers do get in the way when walking. You can always trim them down a little if needed.

Thanks. Other people seem to like my projects too.

Wanna see a few pictures of my project birds?

Wish you luck on your's.

That's a great idea. God knows why I planned to cross breed to get the feathers out the hard way. Trimming them today to check. My biggest birds are around that size too.
I would love to see them!

Love the birds! Especially in love with the giant Silkie cross!
Yes! My light Brahmas are big (for some reason, the lights in India are always bigger, followed by the buff and then the rest of the colours) I'll put some pictures here tomorrow. I'm currently on my way to the railway station- a nearby town- to collect the Faverolles and Spitzhauben.
