Breeding question

I am new to breeding and hatching and was wondering about inbreeding.I would assume that as in with other animals that it is not a good idea?I have a couple of new runs of pullets and wondering do I need to bring in another rooster?

What is the purpose for the breeding? To make more / simply replace losses? Breed to a standard? Create / improve a new flock?

Just to keep flock rotated and replacements if necessary plus my oldest son is always wanting more birds (think he has a dog problem).Not looking to do anything fancy just keep the neighborhood supplied with eggs and enjoy the entertainment.

What breed of chickens do you have? that might help. where do you live ?thank you,

You can line breed for about 8 generations before things like fertility and production to really be impacted, provided you start with a deep enough gene pool. The more unrelated hens you've got to start with, the less of an impact inbreeding will have.

I have a mixture of breeds and I think only 2 of my 7 hens are related so I should be in good shape for a while.Thanks for the input.
