Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco...a bit worried about temps

I have 2 brinsea eco's and one of thoes expensive brinsea spot check digital thermomitors and the 2 glass ones that came with them are accurateto the fancy expensive digital...I think they are accurate....as far as thoes ilttle ones that are attached to a plastic sheet that come styrofoam incubators or brooders, you can throw them in the trash! Thats my personal experience.

Jen, I'll take your word for it! I was sooo worried about cooking those eggs! I'll just use that little thermometer attached to the plastic for my chick brooder. (They can poop on it and I'll throw it away! LOL)

Thanks for you input!

Hi Pink! I'm wondering.....what are the acceptable readings? What's too high?

Hi Sharon!

Well....in my experience some can with stand a short temp spike of several hours (I believe less than 12...don't quote me

) and something over 12 hours of being exposed to 102 will mostly likely do some of them in. That said I have had that happen (because DH gets the woodstove cranked so high that in 18 degree weather we have the front door open to let some heat out....I moved the 'bators to a temp controlled room) and I have had quite a few chicks hatch. I believe I remember reading that some can make it through a temp spike of 104 but temp spikes of 104 lasting for more than four hours would probably certainly do most of them in. I have power outages and would much rather deal with temperature drops than temp. spikes. I don't worry if my temps run from 98 to 100, but this is my personal acceptable range, if I experience extremes then I know my 'bator has issues and I switch to a different 'bator. Get to know your bator and know how it operates in the room that you are using it in. Run test hatches and don't get discouraged if your first hatch isn't perfect.....heck even those that have been incubating for years have less than desirable hatches from time to time....lots of other factors can come into play. Most likely with all luck being on your side you will have some chicks pop out and if you don't.........try it again!

I put 6 eggs in my Brinsea ECO 20 last Friday for a test hatch. The eggs I ordered will be here end of March, and since this is my first time doing it, just had to test! Besides that, I just couldn't wait any longer.

It took a bit of tweeking, turning that little red knob, to get the temp right. It was fluctuating badly at first, but then my hubby (who knows these things) told me to turn that little knob a full turn counterclockwise to reset the tiny whatchamacallits inside then put it back where I thought it should be. You have to know where the starting point is but that's easy cause of the screwdriver line.

After that, it has held a constant temp. Can't explain the electrical reason like he did cause I had no idea what he was talking about, but after so many years of marriage, I trust what he says about these things!

The eggs radiate heat when I put my hand over them...just had to feel when it needed more water!

The only real problem I had with the Brinsea ECO was trying to grip the lid. I attached strips of Velcro (the rough side) to either side of the top and it has 100% gripability now! I was so afraid I'd drop that lid on the eggs that I waited to start incubating until I came up with a good solution.

Good luck to all of us with eggs in the bators!!
