Brinsea Octagon 40 Thread

I got one of these last year and love it. After 3 years of the Hova Bator Little Giant Combo, (HB to incubate, LG to Hatch) It is a nice change. Of fertile eggs, I tend to get 80-90% hatch. I was floating at 50% with the Styrofoam ones.( To be fair, I tended to loose a lot during lock down in the LG.)

I had a noisy fan, which they replaced, and I had another issue which surprised me.

I got home one day from work and the swing arm on the cradle broke, and the incubator was on it's top and open. That hatch did not go well, and they did send the replacement part.

I bought one of these last month that was purchased and used for one hatch from someone local. I got such a deal on the whole thing, even included the humidity pump! I just had a great hatch this past weekend with it! I was thrilled with the basic "set it and forget it" method after having a still air LG that I had to babysit day and night. I did have an issue with keeping the humidity as high as I would have liked at day 18, but figured out is was user error on my part. The gentleman had walked me through how to use it, so I didn't read the instructions as well as I should have. I didn't realize there was water channels in the bottom as well as the one that I feed the humidity pump too. So that sucker was working overtime. It ended up fine, I ran a couple of small humidifiers near it and all was well. I just set 48 Silkie eggs Sunday and now that I know what I know, I am thinking lock down humidity will go much better. :)

Good to know! I would have done the same as you if you did not tell me otherwise. It seems to do fine right now but I imagine when you bump up the humidity to 70% it would have to run a lot more. What did you set your humidity to?

I had it set at 70%. I would fluctuate between 60-70%. Every time a chick hatched it would jump way up, then drop. I like to hatch at 65% generally.

I don't have the humidity pump, but from what I have seen I would definitely fill the channels at lockdown. Like Tucker said, the pump would be working overtime. Both channels will barely get it to 55% in mine, then the pump could supplement and maintain

I'm thinking I will fill both channels and set the pump at 70. I would think it would be able to handle that. Right now it does not run to much. The incubator is in my basement and the humidity down there is around 35% right now. The pump only has to raise it 5% to get it where I have it set. I have not had to refill my water yet and it is still 3/4 full.

If I had the pump that's exactly what I would do.

Another update. I candles all the eggs last night, day 11 of incubation. I ended up with 7 out of 49 not developing. I had 4 black copper Marans that I could not tell on so I left them in for now. There are currently 42 eggs still in the incubator and 38 that I know are good to go at this point.
