We have recently gotten a rooster and his upper beak is broken off! Is there anything I can do to help him? Some people have told me to break the bottom one to match it but I can't bring my self to do that! Please help
As long as he isn't having problems eating and drinking I wouldn't worry about it! I have had rescued hens that were debeaked and one had a short top break and longer bottom beak- she did fine!
The beak should grow back. As stated, as long as he can eat and drink ok he should be fine. You can raise feeders and waterers up to shoulder height to make it easier for him to scoop with his lower beak, if needed, or make a mash by adding water to the feed, which is easier to scoop up.
Okay so it will grow back to normal ? How long would you say? A couple months ? I have been keeping him from the rest of my flock and feeding him bread, fruits, vegetables, etc I feel like since it's softer he has a easier time eating it.
I've had a couple whose beaks grew back- I don't really know how long it took. The one with the really badly cut beak never grew hers back but did fine eating layer mash- she couldn't do pellets. She did love fruits and veggies and bread though! I don't think you need to keep him separated, he should be fine with the others as long as he's properly introduced and healthy!
Here is a pic of my worst girls beak- hers was cut to the point of it never growing back and she lived a very happy life.
Yes, sometimes if the beak is injured too far up, and into the soft tissue or quick, it won't grow back. The picture of the roo does not appear to be broken that far back, so I think it will probably grow back. Give it a couple of months and it should be looking better. And as sannabelle said, even if it didn't he would likely adjust and do fine.
