Brooder setup!

I know, I usually end up with two feedstore chicks a year just to get a stubborn broody off the nest. This year, I was hoping for my usual broody to be ready to mother batch of mail order chicks, but no luck 😆

Question: How are puppy pads for the chicks to walk on? As good as Paper towels and better than newspaper (Seriously, WHO buys NEWSPAPERS now????)
I had an endless supply of puppy pads for awhile after a stellar puppy hardly had to use them. They were definitely the best, but I’ve resorted to paper towels this year and they aren’t bad tho need to be replaced more often.

I’m late to this discussion. Everyone has probably moved on. Story of my life - bear with me 🤷🏻‍♀️😆

Great thread and cool you made it to the front page! All these suggestions are $. I use egg crate too sometimes mostly when I have a lot of birds. On the round feeders I put them on top of upside down plant pot drip trays or a shallow upside down bowl set in deep shavings. I'm about 50/50 on using the paper towel tek. Mainly because I get excited and rush to fill with shavings!

Yeah I only let them stay on the paper towels for a day, because it gets messy fast!

It’s so exciting to get the baby chicks home, the time will fly by and they grow up fast. Love your setup too.

By the way, if you don’t have a brooder or crate with a top, place some deer netting attached with clothespins/paperclips/etc to the top. Sooner or later they will try and go exploring and jump out. Enjoy this special time with them. You will fall in love with your chicks.

wow I can't believe yours are 5 weeks already?!?! I remember when you first posted them, I had placed my order for my chicks a few weeks before that. hahaaa.

and I agree on chicken math. Heck I added to my order before my first chicks even came in. Went from 8 ordered to 10..... But now promised my husband no more THIS year (yes made sure to throw that part in. haaha)
:celebrate
