I was also thinking about using a roll of hardware cloth wire, say 3ft. high, let it keep it's roll shape a bit so it stands on its own and during the day, open the door to the crate and use the roll of hardware to come out from it like a run. You could support it somehow if needed but i don't think you would have to. just temporarily wire it to the crate. You could also just put a sheet over the top of the run to keep them from jumping up. Oh and a remnant piece of linoleum (have the linoleum come out from edges of run so yours dont chew it up like mine did. lol.
