BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I only have 3 pullets and one cockerel for now. This is the first hatch with my homemade incubator. I have 20 incubating which another week and a half will hatch. Only keeping 2 Ameraucanas and one australorp. my coop has already 3 full grown hens. The others are going to a friend of mine to raise. I will have a total of 9 hens and one rooster in the long run with my coop. This big plastic tote is okay for babies. They have to have space. lol I haven't finished the end of my brooder of maybe for the 3 that are coming. Figure only 2 weeks in ages can blend in easier before I let them out to see how my 3 hens feels

This is my brooder. Do you think the doggy might be a problem? It is his old crate. Ha!!
I was going to use a plastic tub but became worried about there being no shade and no top protection. This seems a wiser choice. And maybe Jack will think they're his pack too.

He also really like the feather duster I put in there for the chicks. He wanted to take it with him! I let him smell and taste it. We'll see how he aclimates to the girls.

So our 1st brooder we made out of a 4' x 8' left over laminated foam board.... it served it's purpose until last week when I repeatedly explained to DH that it was too small (inside dimensions were about 2' deep and 4' wide and 18'' tall and I couldn't have birds flying out all over the inside of the house everytime I went over to check on them and opened the lid. So much to my surprise this is what he built in the past few hours.

Casters to roll it around if needed as it is on our covered back porch


Remnant vinyl to line it with and blocks for the feed and water to be housed on top of









Temporary rubber netting (hardware cloth gets here in 3 days)

Thanks so much! Yes we have 10 EE's and another 10 RIR's (or probably Production Reds) ... so total of 20. This is my first experience and my husband has had them before but not for the past 10 years. I hope that they are all girls but I do have my doubts ...especially about one. I see you are in So Cal...so am I. Glad to know I am not the only vertically challenged chicken owner here.

Here's a few photos of my brooder, my husband made for me and I plan to use it as a temp coop when I move them outside in about 2 months.

The top was a solid piece of wood but this worked until they figured out how to jump up to roosting pole and then out!


So my husband Fixed the top so that they wouldn't escape yet we could still have the light on them!

It is home right now to 4 chicks 3 - Cochin Bantams and 1 Chocolate Orpington Bantam
