BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

I love seeing all these different and creative brooders. I wouldn't have even thought about some of these. Got my brooder put together last night with the help of hubby. Just gotta put down the food and water and we should be ready to rock. I'm expecting my chicks today or tomorrow. Here's the one picture I've taken of ours so far. It's our shower in our master bath. It's a small square shower so it was the perfect size for 10 little ones. They'll definitely be nice and warm in the house ybtil they're ready to go outside

Great idea. But where do you shower?! Just kidding. Hope they arrive safe and sound. I'm finding in my brooder it's not big enough to allow them to escape the heat. I put a piece of cardboard in there as a little shelter. I'll check on them in half an hour. Five bantam babies. Just came this morning.

I originally started my four, 2 day old chicks in a large rat cage that has about 1.5ft x 2.5ft floor space (yes, I used to have pet rats and yes, they make great pets!)








When they got to about 2 weeks old, I added a 5 week old pullet to the mix and the rat cage became a bit crowded so I fashioned a brooder out of a pallet and two pieces of scrap plywood. The end result was a 3 sided structure that I push up against a wall to create a 3ft x 4ft area for the chicks. I place cardboard down on the floor beneath it, line it with newspaper, and throw down a good layer of pine shavings on top.




When I'm not home I cover the top of the brooder with a bed sheet and when i'm home I leave the top open so now that the little ones are 4 wks old, they can all fly up to the top of the pallet as they please. Thankfully they are all content to stay only on or in the brooder itself and haven't taken to exploring the rest of the house...yet...

No chicks yet (less than 2 days!), but here's mine an old wooden suitcase. About 2x4ft. The sides will be too short in no time, so I'm planning on putting up chicken wire around the whole thing soon.

Codee... My German Shepherd mix is already keeping it safe.

I started our with a blue plastic tub - hoping for 12-14 out of the 25 eggs we incubated seeing as this was out first hatch. Well when 22 hatched we had to upgrade and I hope I can keep them here until 8 weeks and we integrate into the outside coop with the big girls...

This is a old cattle water tank. I patched up the rusted out holes with cardboard and put some thin insulation on top to hold in heat.



You can see how I attached the heat lamp (red light bulb). I also had to put the water in a cardboard box to keep the chicks from getting so many wood chips in it.

I had to add a oil heater on the side which made heating costs go up, but they don't need it if it gets up to about 50 degrees outside.

This is the new brooder I built in the past couple days. I got the idea from Pinterest that was originally posted here on BYC. Slighly smaller to help fit in the area I need it too.
