Broodies and their Babies

@Faraday40 great pics! I could look at Trouble and Cookie all day. Gorgeous chicks, especially love the lav orps, I'm kinda partial to them. Lol

Gosh, I haven't posted any pics of my SDW OEGB that hatched 3 self-blue OEGBs a couple of weeks ago. I'll fix that tomorrow. :D

Thanks. Both girls are very unique in their own way. DH calls them our "useless chickens." Eggs are small, they go broody easily, & they're sometimes noisy. Of course they make up for their small size with BIG personalities. DD talked us into keeping them because, "they're so tiny, they shouldn't even be counted into our chicken number." LOL

Sold 2 more chicks yesterday, so we're down to the last 4 chicks. (Poor Trouble only has 1 & Cookie has 3.) I left the tractor door open for them to free range this afternoon. They stayed together throughout the yard. Not sure if it was that they wanted to stick together or if Trouble was waiting for Cookie to look away so she could steal an extra chick. Tonight I found them all in one nest box. LOL

I'm sure there will be plenty next month. Winter's not the best time to hatch, but DD did do a sci fair hatching project. She used an incubator, though, not a broody hen. She tested & compared hatch rates from backyard, farmer's market, & grocery store eggs. (Both quail & chicken) It was her 1st time hatching quail & what fun she had! She played her role as broody hen very well.

She let the chicks & quail run around & when she clucked, they all came running up into her her open arms. We kept 4 of the quail & they still follow her around when she calls them.

My hens disagree. The winters here are fairly wet, so they seem to figure if they are inside anyway they might as well be hatching eggs.
