We removed her from the nest and let her man and "sisters" out with her. She ran all over with them and when I called them home with scratch, she went into the pen with them. Seems to be snapping out of it already. She never even did the clucking they do to call chicks-every broody I've had started practicing that in the last couple of days before hatch. Maybe it's for the best anyway.
Well, I've moved Panda and her two into the larger broody pen that Smoky was in and Nora is in the Firetower with her three. No more broodies this year, please Lord!
This is the year of the Rooster AND the year of the BROODY. I have so many I am trying to sell some of them off. I have a single chick hatched in my big coop......it fell out of the top nest where it had hatched out under a cochin hen....was stolen by one of my broody leghornx hens....who then left for just a second to get a snack and it got stolen by one of the OTHER broody leghornx hens.....and then was stolen BACK by the original leghornx hen this morning. I have 4 more broodies in that coop that might steal if before the day is over. They are all nice to it, just feel the need to cluck at it and tuck it under them when nobody is looking. Darn broodies.....
I can just picture these broody hens sneaking around behind each others back and enticing the wee one away with clucks and choice morsels of something good! Candy little baby???
Maybe a trip to the feed store for a handful of fresh chicks is in order. It would give those girls someone to cluck over without worrying about the one babe already hatched. At least you know this little one will never want for attention from all of his/her aunties!!
Well, Nora's three boys are over 7 weeks old now and Panda's two chicks are six weeks old. Tomorrow, Chipper, the BR boy with his group and the BR pullet with Panda are going to a new home. I'll miss Chipper! He is the calmest, bravest, most personable fellow we've ever seen. Wouldn't you miss this face?? That will leave Bandit, Riley's son, and the blue Orp with Panda still here, but neither broody is ready to quit being a mama yet. They have been exemplary moms for first timers.
Cyn, just tell me that he is going to a great home, where they'll lavish attention on him and will always be the center of their universe, and I'll be fine with it. Is he destined to be the head rooster of this flock? I so hope he is! He has the potential, judging from what you have told us about him.
Do I understand you correctly Cyn? That Nora is going with Chipper? And that you're keeping Panda? Hope that they will all be happy in their new homes. Any chance of getting the adoptive family to give you periodic updates on how Chipper does? As he has already demonstrated his uniqueness, it would be nice to hear from him from time to time, to see if he continues to develop into a magnificent young man!
No, Nora has three boys. Panda has a pullet and a cockerel. Chipper, who is with Nora, a BR male also with Nora and the BR pullet with Panda are going with a frequent customer and friend to live. That is unless she'd prefer Bandit to Chipper. I want to leave one chick with each broody since they are not finished being moms just yet. I'm sure I'll get plenty of progress reports on them. This friend has 20 hens or so and they will be Chipper's harem, shared by whichever boy she takes with her tomorrow--she's taking two cockerels and the lone pullet. We'll miss the boy. Getting very attached to him already and I'm not sure Isaac would share with another rooster anyway, even if it is his own son.
Nora is staying here for the time being till I can discern if she is still having egg issues after her long hiatus, then if so, she may go to live with the BYC member who was going to take her before she went broody. Panda is Zane's daughter and will be staying here.
Oh wow! I didn't realize that Panda is Zane's daughter. Of course she must stay!!! How old is Panda? I was under the impression that she was still quite young.
Apparently she was conceived before Zane's legs went all wonky on him? She must have been. How else...I mean...**blushing furiously here** Oh never mind!
It doesn't really matter. I'm just glad to hear that you do have offspring from dear, sweet Zane!
I hope there will someday be updates on Chipper and company, complete with pictures of him, all grown up, and happily ensconced in his new harem....even if he does have to share it. Twenty some odd girls for two boys should be plenty. Especially as they'll be growing up together.
