Broody Goose in December?

Ok, I guess il be keeping them for a few months after they hatch, if they do. I really am looking forward to seeing the whole goose family walking around our yard. Im waiting for them to hatch any day now. I've been checking on the geese and there seems to be nothing happening yet. I'm thinking about candling them tonight. I also know that geese don't do well alone,so i'm going to sell them as two goslings minimum. Has anybody else had a goose go broody in the winter? Are most of the eggs usually fertile?

Hi chickeneer, I can´t comment on winter goslings as my winter goslings (July) don´t have the same weather conditions to contend with. One comment I´d like to make, though, is not to be in too much of a hurry to find goslings, as sometimes the eggs can take a little over the usual 30 days. I have some here that hatch at 28 days, some at 30, but I´ve read that some can take up to 32 days.

Well I guess I just got my answer....I candled the eggs last night. Only one of them had an embryo, the rest were completely clear. The embryo seemed to be pretty far along, it looks like it will hatch in the next 3-5 days. I am actually pretty glad about this, because since it's only one gosling, I get to keep it. I mean who doesn't have room for just one more bird?(haha i just realized the gravity of that statement,"chicken math" as people here call it.) I can get to see our geese raise it from hatch-ling to adult, and that's fine by me. Thought they will be extra aggressive in the coming months, at least I know that the gosling will be well protected.

I am happy for you and them at least 1 is going to hatch, watch them closely to make sure they are caring for it properly especially if cold where you are, sometimes first time parents don't do so well and you don't want the lil one to chill. looking forward to seeing it.

What part of the world are you in chicken err?
I live in the central valley of California, so its not cold here at all. Its been in the 60s and 70s (farenheit) the past couple of weeks, so its actually pretty warm.

I checked her eggs this morning, nothing yet, but it could hatch any day now, and since many of you have suggested it could take more than 30 days, then i really have no idea when this one egg might hatch.

I tried to take some pictures, but the male came after me before i could take more that a couple

he also bit my finger. I hope its all worth it.

Here she is in her little house sitting on eggs. The male happened to be in there with her, and came out when he saw me coming.

Great! So you get your winters a bit like ours, then...not too bad at all. Makes it so much easier when you have the gosling, as it won´t need heat or anything more than just the goose. I hope all goes well and that she´s a sensible mum.
