Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

The one to the left seems to have a very flat comb.. id be leaning towards female until there are signs showing otherwise. I've had several slow feathering females, and fast feathering males (aka Heartbreakers!!)

The frizzle has a straight comb, and the other is some kind of flat comb

I’m pretty sure the frizzle is a Roo, he’s chest bumping and pouncing /mock flogging at every chance he gets.

Once they’re old enough, I’m going to dump them in the run and have the hens instill some manners into these two!

My solo chick, now 2 months old, is a cockerel. The name Juno has been changed to Jude. He was weaned by his mama at 4 weeks and left alone to navigate the rules of the flock, which means he’s lowest, and must absolutely respect everyone. And so I witness how a flock raises a cockerel. Maybe he will be an understudy to our rooster.....and we can keep him.....

Mama Violetta just went broody again and spent 2 days and nights in the broody jail. I said, No more chicks this year!

Violetta is a good momma, i think it would be worth it to let her sit again

I tossed my kids in the run today so they can learn some manners. Frizzle is definitely a roo, wattles already coming in at 12 days

Any of you with polish chickies now or in the past... did you notice early leg width correlation with future males/females?

Going on that thought.. i wonder if i don't have 2-3 males and one female in my newest batch only on 2 weeks old now, so too soon to evaluate anything else. Tails just popped out overnight and one has crazy hair about to start...

still cleaning poops stuck to butt feathers too. Added olive oil to the vent and surrounding feathers hopefully that will help prevent some sticking. Contemplating turning off the heat lamp.. its 75 in my house, but i think the heat lamp is having a poop drying effect.

Show us some pics! Yes the heat lamp will add a drying effect for sure. Make sure they can get out of the heat into ambient room temp! Then you can see what they prefer....

Ok ill try to get pics.. they are still in the terrorized of giant hands coming towards them phase.. and probably not happy about the butt cleaning. I want them to get some differentiating signs for pics, too!!

The brooder is pretty big, they do move out from under the heat lamp here and there, but they do seem to like being closer to it. I'd like to just shut off the lamp altogether.. its 110 out and i have the ac running, with a heat lamp in the hall ill give them a few more days with it.

78 outside today, and I had the mostly fluff 2 week olds out in the run (under a big old tree, so shaded) for about 5 hours.

They didn’t peep a single complaint, nor did they dash for their heated cave when they got back to the brooder. So I suppose they’re a lot more tolerant of being “cold” than we think?

They didn’t peep a single complaint, nor did they dash for their heated cave when they got back to the brooder. So I suppose they’re a lot more tolerant of being “cold” than we think?

That makes me very happy to hear! Hoping since they're a little bunch, that they can use their collective body heat if necessary.. i mean, i have to WORK to keep the house cool!! Ok.. i think ill switch them to a daylight light bulb and lights out at night (still the same temp at night, no drop). Thank you

if they’re cold you’ll definitely hear about it
