Pippin's broody again! Yesterday we gave her 2 fertile mystery eggs (try to guess what they are HERE) they are expected in 20-21 days (26th may)
I'm not sure how many will join in but I have started a Hatch-A-Long, I'm not completely sure how these work- hopefully someone can help me!
Have broodies with eggs? Please join in! 1626086979286.png

i have a girl who is broody. she is sitting on 6 eggs from our flock and started May 10. Hatch day should be may 31. picture is of dad and a couple of our girls. mom is in the front giving the stink eye. she spent two weeks deciding if she was going to commit by sitting in nesting boxes and screaming if anyone came near her (but not all day), stomping around puffed up and growling at everyone, and doing a weird wing thing if anyone got too close. i suppose this is the equivalent of chicken PMS.

Day 11 update.
I will candle tonight and eliminate (get rid of) the infertile eggs. It gets dark really late so it will be really late when I candle.
I wrote up a plan I'd like to share.

PLAN
  1. put eggs under Pippin
  2. Candle day 7
  3. Candle day 11 and eliminate infertile eggs
  4. If eggs have developed, prepare for chicks
  5. Candle day 16 and prepare for lockdown
  6. Do not annoy Pippin during lockdown.
  7. Hope for chicks

But, lucky for Pippin, my young pullet, Blue (3-4mo), has insisted on helping Pippin raise her chicks. This includes: calling them to eat, looking after them while Pippin rests, following Pippin around like a bodyguard, sleeping woth Pippin in the nest-box and sitting on a chick or 2 at night (since they are too big to ALL fit under Pippin)
