Broody Hen Thread!

Put wooden eggs in the nest Emcrowston. Or golf balls. After awhile they get the hint.
bigT88, that happened to me too! Then a third went broody. Lol! Managed to get eggs for all. Good luck!
thank you, im actually really grateful this happened. im going on vacation that week and day 18 is in the middle was going to have friend stop the eggs and put water in. but now i can just let the hens do the work and when i come home there will be lots of chickies.

Love it when things just work out! Can't wait for pics when you get back! Have a great vacation!

I just want to say thank you to whomever it was who suggested using a dog crate with air beneath to break the cycle of my broody Orpington. It WORKED! I had tried other things which didn't but I left her in the crate for 4 days and I now have my girl back! I'm thrilled. I am so grateful for the whole website of backyard chickens... I have learned so much.
Thanks to all, Kate

I'm going to have to remember that if I need it in future. I do have a wire dog crate. Thanks for posting your success!

I have a very young hen that appears to be broody. If possible I would love her to hatch some chicks as I have always found broodies better than the incubator. Anyway, I think she is 22 weeks old, she has been laying for around 5 weeks now but her eggs are still very small. I will put some different eggs under her but do you think she will be ok? I'm just a but worried about her being so young.....

I've had a girl sit who was 17 weeks and hadn't even started laying yet. She co hatched a brood then helped raise them. She finally started laying when the chicks were 4 weeks old. I wouldn't worry about her age, just don't give her too many to try to cover.

I was watching the chickens as usual and Broody Judy my white silkie hen left her chicks that are older and she went back in the nest box on the ground and she sat down then she poked her head out and started to grab sticks and straw and throw it behind her then her and the buff silkie rooster went in together and sat beside eachother, but I went over and lifted the lid and scared them out because I recently bought a incubator and if i let her sit I wont get any eggs for about 3 months so I'm not gonns let her sit till next spring but I love my broody silkie
