Broody Hen Thread!

I have a little itty bitty serama who has gone broody.
The last few days she has been on a clutch of 3 eggs. Suddenly today there is a 4th egg! Is this normal? I thought they stopped laying when they went broody? Two of teh original three already have some veining in them, so I'm worried the last guy will be behind.

Also - her boyfriend still lives with her. They are my only two serama and she gets really upset when I take him away. He is still mating with her, but doesn't really seem to be interfering with her sitting on the nest. He just mounts her while she sits on her clutch and she growls and life resumes. Is this ok? Do I need to worry about him and the babies? He is generally pretty aggressive to anyone new in his coop.

And last - I have a handful of serama eggs in the bator a couple days behind her - if they hatch, can I give the babies to her if her babies hatched a few days ahead of the bator babies? Should I give her the bator eggs before they hatch, or wait until they babies are out and give them to her then? What are the chances of her rejecting the bator babies?

Thanks!!!

They normally stop laying does her butt look flat compared to when she wasn't broody? The chances of her rejecting them depend on the bird itself some are more accepting then others I believe that if her chicks are over a week old or if the bator ones were a week old when introduced she would most likely not accept them
Hope I answered you're questions right
Good night

I'm so POed at my girls!! They have, single handledly, managed to kill every single egg. Ill be absolutely if a single one hatches.
Grrrr.
what did they do?

Well one just sits under the other. Literally. She shoves her head under her chest, under her butt, wherever she can get her head.
But whenever the Cochin girl gets up, she (Serema) sits on the Cochins whole clutch. And while their the same size, the Cochin girl is twice as fluffy. And bigger, too. Not much but a bit. So then, the Cochin girl either sits on nothing or one egg. And the Serema has these eggs overflowing so some of them is warm, some is cold. Or their just flat out cold.

BUT, on the other hand, ONE PIPPED!!! It was cold, so I flipped and started to peel the membrane when blood and a 'peep....peep....' Came out O.O I set her back under, where she'd be warm. Pipped 2 days early, too!!! :O

Eta;;
OMG, she pipped the wrong end!!! No wonder it was bleeding! Doh, why didnt I notice that! She's alive, peeping, but still blood and no zip. Hopefully zip by morning

Eta;;
She's doing good.,, her sister pipped too... Wrong end. :| and I cracked open the large egg because the chick was dead (retarded in growth, malpositioned, but fully devolped) and it was gonna pip the wrong end too.
*** chicks??
Oh, so out of a dozen 2 *might* hatch. Argh.

*-I was pretty surprised myself! they both sat on the eggs together, and now they have 6 babies! they haven't moved away from the dog house yet, I think they are still trying to hatch the rest of the eggs. think there are 8 left.

Hi. My serama roo's hatch with the en all the time...................guard the nest, help the little ones learn to eat and drink. I have never had a problem with leaving the roo...........
If the one egg is just a few days off, I think it will be OK...............depends on if the hen decides to give up on it.
As far as the others,, they say imprint is the first four days..............My concern would be how many she can handle.............I do not have an answer for this.
Also, I did give an incubator chick to a hen with chicks one time. Discovered she would let it huddle under her for warmth but it cried all the time because she would not let it eat or drink.
Had to take it out. good luck.they are so sweet.....=)

So all of the eggs have pipped!!! Out of dozen, 3 are pipped. 2 wrong end, 1 right end, one just poked the air cell. I've interfered WAY too much, I just want babies! Lol, but every Is doing good, even if I made them bleed a little. The first girl who pipped last night is good, another pipped (I picked a little so there's a hole and I can see if s/he's breathing or not) this morning, and I just found the brahma egg pipped. I picked so I could see the beak (I'd be paranoid w/o seeing a beak... I just freak that its dead..... ) and it looked shrink wrapped a bit, so I kinda picked the membrane, bled a bit, annoyed the chick, and then set back. I just hope I didn't screw with anything. I was looking at the one egg that didnt pip and I heard a little 'peep'. So cute. I can't wait for them hatch :D
