Broody Hen Thread!

So all of the eggs have pipped!!! Out of dozen, 3 are pipped. 2 wrong end, 1 right end, one just poked the air cell. I've interfered WAY too much, I just want babies! Lol, but every Is doing good, even if I made them bleed a little. The first girl who pipped last night is good, another pipped (I picked a little so there's a hole and I can see if s/he's breathing or not) this morning, and I just found the brahma egg pipped. I picked so I could see the beak (I'd be paranoid w/o seeing a beak... I just freak that its dead..... ) and it looked shrink wrapped a bit, so I kinda picked the membrane, bled a bit, annoyed the chick, and then set back. I just hope I didn't screw with anything. I was looking at the one egg that didnt pip and I heard a little 'peep'. So cute. I can't wait for them hatch :D

Cragrats on your babies. My Brahmas are on day 21 & I don't even have a pip. They are in the incubator rocking. I don't know if anyone else does this or not but I've found that it works for me. I have a plastic pair of tweezers that I dip in warm water & very gently drop a single drop of water on the membrane if they look dry. You can see all the veins if any when the membrane is moist. Don't soak the chick & keep the water away from the chicks nose & mouth. This has saved me the heartache of having one bleed. I read that on here somewhere. I don't like to mess with them but my Hava Bator does not have a fan speed & it will dry them out. I really wish my broody would take them.

Just candled my banty's clutch, out of 8 eggs from 3 flocks, only the 2 ameraucana x marans are fertile :( Oh well, maybe some nice olive eggs in a couple of weeks! I'll wait 3 or 4 days before I chuck the eggs that didn't develop. 2 is good, as long as they both make it!!!

I'm a little worried about her. She isn't pooping or eating on her own unless I physically take her off the clutch. Even then, she hardly eats anything. I know she doesn't get off on her own because there is NO poop at all in her house, and no sign the food has been touched either. (for 2 days) Also her poop is pure dark liquid green (bile?) when I finally broke down and removed her physically from her house.

My girls don't seam to be eating much either, but since they have done this for the last 2 years I am sure they know better then me.
They would normaly free range and hatch them out in the bush but I got a new pen just for the broodies so they are now caged up.
Chickens have been doing this since the dawn of time ,us humans tend to over worry and bother them instead of letting narture do what she does best.
I was a worry wort once as well ,but learned to let them alone they do a fantastic job.

Ok so all of the eggs that made it to lockdown hatched.
Turned put I had *1* Serema egg survivor :O and 2 Cochin eggs!!! I didn't want 2 more Cochins, I wanted 2 Seremas, min! I only have one pair of Cochins and they ALWAYS produce the same exact color, now i have 2 young twins and 1 older, feathered out twin >.< but, at least ill be able to keep a girl, cause I'm pretty sure that my feathered out Cochin is a boy.
It's funny, the Cochin eggs ALWAYS pip and hatch first, the Serema is still wet :O but I got a cuty putooty!! I think she's a brahma... Came out of a large, dark brown egg, but she's buff with a few black markings (like the cochin chicks, but the cochins mom is buff) Funny, since my brahma is light brahma and my Cochin roo is partridge....
But, just like I thought, the Serema is a great mum. Cochin hasn't ditched yet, so there's hope!

You should NEVER let a guinea just nest where she wants w/o making sure you KNOW she's safe. They get killed in the nest all the time, that's why you move them or take the eggs
