Broody Hen Thread!

'ello! Jumping in on y'alls thread.
One of my silkies is sitting on lord knows how many eggs. Just marked them all today. She can cover them....barely. So come 8/11 I will have a gazillion or so...or not...chicks. She is silkie. Pop would be a red naked neck frizzle standard sized. Unfortunately their may be some frizzle eggs in there also which will not be a good cross. Did not realize everyone was laying so many eggs in there! Will remove the unmarked eggs every day. will also "pen off" the nest soon. have had problems with chicks being killed or crushed by other hens. But that can wait a week or so....good luck everyone.

Shellz, were your eggs shipped? If anything disturbs the eggs before they're set, it could kill the embryo making the egg look like it's not fertile even so it was. Shipped eggs are notoriously difficult to hatch, and it has nothing to do with skill, but with luck. How gentile was the post office? That's it. Some eggs, such as Serama eggs, are especially delicate. I really hope those 3 hatch for you though!

50% isn’t bad for shipped eggs!

I have a mockled star which went broodie about 4 weeks after starting to lay. She has 4 brahma chicks and doing really well as a mum. I am planning to move her and her chicks into the shed with the rest for a few days in her run. The shed is plenty big enough for this. Then I plan to let her out once the other hens are used to them. Does this sound as if it might work to integrate them. The chicks are 3 weeks old.

Afraid not. I picked them up a 1/2 hour from our place. Go fig. Only thing I could think of was maybe the roo had a favourite(s) & the 6 eggs were from a hen that never got mated in the last month? I've got 2 other broodies on eggs I got from a different breeder (Malines) we also drove to. They're doing great so far! I just checked the last 3 BLRW eggs again. Bleah! I'm going to take 3 Malines out & give them to her. One more week won't kill her & she'll have something to show for it, I'm sure! I sent a note to the BLRW breeder about the failed eggs. Just for her information. I'm not looking for compensation. Crap happens.

Ok only one duckling and it seams a little lethargic.
Moved it and momma to another pen will have to keep an eye on them to make sure the duckling is going to be ok.

Our old game hen went broody about a month ago, then a week later our other game hen, & then our bantam another week later. If one hen goes broody, do other hens exhibit the same behavior or is it just coincidence?
