Broody Hen Thread!

i have a broody silki who just hatched her first chick this year!! i left her in our regular coop because when ever i move her she will stop being broody. she seems to care about the eggs more than the chicks. last year she was a good mom to four but a fith hatched late last year and she killed him so im not sure if she will be a fine mom or a bad mom. should i move he to a seprate space now and see if she will stay there? should i take the chick away from her after 48 hours? or should i take away the eggs after some amout of tiem? any help would be awesome thx :)

Best of luck to you & your broody! Hope she hatches them all!

Awww thanks, we had a tragic turn of events-- baby fell outa the nest mama hopped down after the chick (they are on the floor of the coop nested in straw) and I moved the eggs to a box full of straw near our dryer (I was pretty sure they were close to hatching and did nt know what to do)-- and our dogs got em. Ate the whole bunch. Sigh. At least it was quick I didnt want the chicks to suffer and I just didnt want to throw them away....

Ours hopped down out of the nest (we didnt seperate her either shes like yours and wont set if we move her) after the one chick that had hatched the day before-- 5 eggs left and it was day 25 when she hopped down outa the nest box after her chick.
It wouldnt occur to me to take her chick! She loves him, they are very bonded.....
I removed the eggs (so she wouldnt be torn between eggs or the hatched chick- and, as above the eggs got eaten

... we dont have an incubator though so wasnt sure what I was going to do anyway!

THats my experience! As of yesterday!!

My broody serama has been broody for a long time and nothing is developing in her eggs. So I got her some 1 day old chicks from someone local and I can't get her to sit on them. Is there anything I can do???

Oh crap. Sorry to hear that. I was a basket case last year with my broody. In a different coop with nest boxes too high. Built a ramp for her & chicks. This year, new coop, lower nest boxes, less stress.
