Broody Hen Thread!

I think my Alice will be my chicken momma, she has been broody for months. She is always sitting on eggs, she gets all fluffed up and growls at me when I collect the eggs. When I put them back in the coop at night she runs right back to the nesting box. I might have a problem with her staying on them because she will be sitting on some of them but the others that are in other nesting boxes will be just sitting there and almost warm.

So will she go back to the nesting box if I put all the eggs in one of the boxes while the others are empty. She is usually in only one nest box religously, but not always. How can I make sure she will go back to a box that has eggs in it, if she goes to one that has nothing in there. Our weather is getting pretty even here, usually in the high 30s - low 50s in the day, at night low 20s. Everyone once in awhile we will get a 60 day and a teen night. What do you all think?

I am having a problem with my broody already. Apparently it's not cool to be broody longer than 48 hours at a time and she was off her fake egg nest for 4 hours today. Then she went back to a nest with no eggs but was SUPER happy and trilled and purred like crazy as I gave her wood eggs one by one. Good thing I ordered her chicks, not egglets! She totally would have killed any eggs today by leaving them in the freezing nest boxes; our days are only in the 30s right now. Brrrr!

I've heard many dozens of people on the forums talk about their experiences giving their broody chicks; it's likely to work but we do have a backup plan if it doesn't work. We'll be doing it late at night (so I'll brood them in the house from the time I get them, until about 11pm. Then I will rub them on her belly and not talk at all, and leave them with her. I'm sure I'll be up checking on them all night!

But I will also be up at the crack of dawn to make sure she doesn't hurt them. Don't be so certain she won't take them, most hens will if done in the dark.

My daughter and I are going to start letting my broody sit on some eggs to see how she does. I think I will start sat, I will probably give her about 5. So here goes nothing??

That's what my brothers girlfriends parents do when they have a broody. They either give her a couple of chicks or ducks or a combination.
