Broody Hen Thread!

16 paws, I bet real money that little one has vision of some sort in that one remaining eye. Her recovery is nothing short of amazing and you are directly responsible for that along with that little one's survival instinct. Good job!

WVduckchick. Great pictures and totally adorable babies!

i have a broody austrolorp she was found laying on about 14 eggs. but where she was laying is where i had chicks die last time because they couldn't get out easily and there was no water. I tried moving her and isolating her to another location and she didn't like it and has abandoned the nest. are there any suggestions as to what i could do to isolate her and make her comfortable enough to stay

I have to be very careful when moving my broodys. Many times they will quit but it can be done.
I use PD-Rivermans way of moving a broody. It works the best.
And of course always make sure they have access to food and water.
Good luck

Well, Three out of ten Serma (spelling?) Anyway if nothing happened to them, hen is a first timer, I should have three little ones running around with their mom...when I get home. I know it seems like a low hatch rate...but I'm just glad I ended up with three!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed....hopefully all will be fine....

If the hen is serama, ten eggs may be too many. With my serama hens I have found that 7 eggs is a good number. A few of my smallest have a hard time covering five. I'm quite happy when my serama hatch three or four; ecstatic when it is five or more. Also, many serama hens go back to laying when their brood is three weeks old-weaning the chicks in time to brood the next setting of eggs. Serama chicks are small, but small does not mean frail. I have lost just one serama chick in the past year.

My sweet Ms. Buffie, has been siting for more than 21days. She is by herself in a single run.
We've never had one sit and be successful. She did hatch one and it drowned, so I changed her water tower immediately. She has scooted out several eggs, I guess she knows, which aren't going to hatch.
Daddy has upset her a few times, by lifting her up.
On the other hand, we don't know this time EXACTLY how many she is sitting on.
Question-will she get up, if none hatch?
Will we know when she's done?

My sulky broody is definitely properly broody now after several weeks of nearly broody :) She's not laid for 4 days now and has stuck to the nest so much that I've been a bit worried as she hasnt eaten, drunk or pooped in a few days. I took her out of the nest this evening to put some straw in as she'd kicked all the bedding out and even putting her down right next to the food and water she just spread herself out on the floor and didn't touch the food. Put her back on the nest and gave her some eggs and she shuffled them all round under her as I gave them to her and seemed happy with them.

When I went down an hour later to lock up the young ones who party late I could hear some scroffling noises from her coop so took a peak. She's finally got up and eaten and drunk and was settling back down on her eggs looking very happy. I hope she manages to hatch some this time. I've just given her some barnyard mix from a friend who mostly have light sussex type chickens. Also 2 of my other girls eggs to see what happens with them.

My second post and first picture maybe will work. My first broody put fifteen under her of assorted varieties at least eight have hatched so far here is a pic of the ones that didn't dive for cover.

Update
Well didn't want to bother my broody or trust my candling so stayed hands off completely. She ended up hatching 11 of 15 eggs hers and my first time isn't that a decent hatch still? I will post some good pic in a day or two.
