Broody in Feb!!!??

Well, my late February broody should be hatching her eggs any day now! Had to put water and food in the nest with her because she hasn't got up to eat. She is eating the food and drinking the water I put in the nest with her. It is a bit dicey getting that in there with her as she is getting very protective of the eggs. Don't know if any have pipped yet. Will post any piccies as soon as I know. Fingers crossed!

Last count she had 8 eggs she was sitting on.

Well the silkie no longer has any eggs under her. The one that piped yesterday my wife peeled out of the shell last night. The silkie had rolled it out of the nest and it was really chirping loudly and the membrane was starting to get really dry. The egg that had not piped I cracked open today. The chick was positioned to pip to the air sack but did not actually punch into it. The membrane had celephaned the poor thing inside. The silkie had a few issues of not getting off the nest to do her buisness and ended up soiling the last two eggs a lot. I washed them off under hot running water on Tues. so now we have 11 chicks sofar and anouther 7 that are developing under Blaze the Banam Cochin. We had 15 under her but 8 were non starters. The rest had good development on them sofar. We will see next week how many we end up with. All the remaining eggs are D'Uccle eggs. The Silkie/D'Uccle eggs were the non starters.

Our 3 eggs are due to hatch tomorrow. Our 2 broody bantams are still sharing the eggs and the nesting box. We moved them to their own little coop to hatch and raise their chicks. It's hard, because this is the first time we've had chicks hatch outside. The other ones were either in the incubator or under a broody in the kennel. I just want to see and know. The coop they're in is not easy to see into. You have to lift the roof up to see inside, so I can't be peeking in there too often. I will have to check to see if I need to put chick feed in there. Don't want to open the bag unless I know the chicks are hatching. Silly, I know.

Well, had a peek today with all the rain coming down. So far, the coop is staying dry inside. However, I miscounted LOL, she started sitting on this clutch the day we got the big snow storm here, that was Feb. 25th (that's when I stopped taking the eggs away from her and decided to let her try to hatch), so today is only day 16. Guess I was rushing her a bit

Couldn't stand it, I had to peek at the girls. First thing this morning they didn't seem to be doing anything, but around 10:30 am I peeked under them and 1 was zipping and there was another egg that was either zipped all the way around or had already hatched. I couldn't tell. I didn't see a chick. OOOOHHHHHH!!!!!! It's so exciting!

I am so excited for you.
I just went to check on my Silkie broody and she is doing fine. She left me a huge poo at the end of the nest so I cleaned it up before she steps in it and soils the eggs. I think she is finishing her first week on 8 eggs.

There is one chick for sure. I'm pretty sure there's a second one too, but it's hiding really good. The 3rd egg (which was growing the best I thought) still hasn't pipped. I want a good look at the babies, but the mamas are very "pecky". Won't really let me see anything. I can't get a good pic because they are hiding the chicks so well. Must find other things to do besides obsess over what's happening with chicks...
