Broody? What's broody?

Broody means that a hen wants to spend time sitting on a clutch of eggs and hatching them. Then she raises the chicks.

But every hen is different and some last longer than others.

Hope this helped.

Not every hen goes broody, but typically in the springtime, they'll lay 12-14 eggs and then start setting on them. We talk a lot about "broodiness" on BYC because once a hen goes "broody" she will NOT leave her nest, no matter what. It's like a switch goes off in her head and she acts very differently, fighting you if you try to take eggs away from her. If you don't want your hen going broody in the first place, remove the eggs she lays every single day.
