Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, It's cold outside!

I've been in those well-below-zero temps and I don't want to go back! I have a naked hen inside the house in a pet carrier because the temps went down to about 7 degrees last night and being low on the totem pole, she just had no one to snuggle with.

I think the high here today will be around 15 (that might be pushing it) but my thermometer in the sun reads 35 and I know that's wrong! I will open the door shortly to see if the girls want to go out!

My outside thermometer is reading 21 degrees as of right now but it is getting windy so is going to feel alot colder. Let the chickens out as usual earlier this morning and the only ones that are in the coops are the ones that are laying. Just went out to throw them some leftovers, couple of raisin cinnamon bages, some cooked leftover brussel sprouts, some roast lamb from last weekend and a broken egg that I dropped in the sink when I was putting them in the carton yesterday. The fridge gets cleaned out on the weekend! Later in the day I will throw them some scratch as it will be wayyyyyyy cold by then. Stay warm everyone, I already have a pan of stew cooking, woodstove is chugging, just will need to go out and do chores and carry in more wood.

10:30 am and it is still -15.

You folks out east button up I think its headin your way.

On the plus side, there is little wind out and the sun is shining with gorgeous blue sky!!

I just spent 20 minutes outside and suffered none, one of my cats is at the moment sitting in the sun on a straw bale sunning herself.

Well.....its above 10 degrees now...and I just came in. ALL fared well. Was at least 20 in the coops....30 in one. Whew, I was sooo worried.
Cynthia...I hope your little nekkid one recovers quickly. High protene should help with the feathers coming back...right?? OK, going to stoke the wood stove again! Ahhhhh, heat!!

This morning when I checked the coop temps they were 25F in the indoor run and 30 in the henhouse/roosting area. I didn't think that was too bad, considering the outdoor temp was -1 with -17 wind chill.

wiscchickenlvr we are practically neighbors-you too itsme- -it was -19 this am and is up to -9 at almost noon in Eau Claire. They say the high should be 3 today.

Yes, Deb, she has high protein. Her pellets are 22% and I'm giving her chopped hardboiled eggs and a tiny bit of dry catfood (dont want to overdo that, but I think she really needs it right now) Time, extra protein, and not freezing to death while the feathers are coming in are what Lexie needs.

Good morning everyone! Baby, it's cold outside! It's 11:30 am and we've warmed to 13 degrees F. My flock is still cooped up, but I'm going to open their little pop door that leads to the run in a little while. I want to lather up their combs first.

My flock will come outside no matter what the temps.
They even come out in the snow, but we don't have any snow right now. They just really love to go outside! It's soooooooo cold........to the bone cold! I really don't think they know any better???????

Cynthia, I think I might bring my little EE girl inside that has a bare back from roo damage also. How is yours doing? I have a few other that have either gone through a light molt or it's roo damage, but they aren't as bare as my sweet submissive EE girl. I've checked for mites, but haven't seen any.

Everyone stay warm!
Kim
