Where did you buy him from?
He's definitely a mix, but he probably has some Marans in him.
From a local hatchery farm. When I contacted them last month to ask if I could possibly have a BSL that is male (even tho he didn't have the white spot on his head that male BSL chicks have when hatched), I was basically told anything is possible when birds are cross breeding. I'm guessing 1 or both of the parents were 1st generation BSL, which means color of offspring WON'T be sex linked and therefore color alone can't be used to determine gender.
Either way he's an awesome chicken and since everyone else looks very much like a pullet, he can guard the girls.
Those are definitely cockerels, but not BSL. I wonder if they're "Asian blacks".Your post has changed my life! Lol. I have been searching the internet for weeks now trying to figure out what breed birds I have (labeled as BSL at TSC 8 weeks ago). I also have been spending hours trying to convince myself that the cockerels I have ARENT cockerels because, well, they can’t be if they are truly BSL. I have always doubted they were BSL once their feathers started coming in as they looked nothing like the traditional BSL. Now, they are 8/9 weeks old and 2 of the 6 have feathering that is different than the rest and large/red combs. I am going to upload pictures of their feathering and would love if you’d tell me if this is what your cockerel looked like at this age? I feel like I can finally breathe easy! Did you ever figure out what exactly your GORGEOUS cockerel is mixed with? Thanks so much!
I have said exactly that! I know nothing about them so I honestly just don’t know... I am able to have roosters and can have about 3 (as long as they can all coexist together) so I’m not too concerned but I’d love to know what they are! Those are definitely cockerels, but not BSL. Yes yours look very much what mine looked like at that age!! It was frustrating trying to find pics online of what I may have, so I know what you mean. I sent pics of him to the hatchery (small family farm) and they said my cockerel looked like a Barred rock: Rhode Island mix... which is basically what a BSL is-however- it only works when crossing a pure BR and pure RIR. A sex link can’t make more sex links, they won’t breed true meaning they can’t be sexed by color at birth. I’m guessing mine- Andy maybe yours- were oops breedings with a 2nd generation BSL? I researched extensively when trying to figure out what my bird could be, and that’s what I learned about that. You may already know that info, but I had no idea how I could end up with a BSL roo!Your post has changed my life! Lol.
