Hello all,
I have a 2 year old BR named Newspaper and I noticed a few days ago that she had bubbles coming out of her mouth. When I held her mouth open I noticed mucus as well as on the left hand side of her throat a white cottage cheesey looking mass. I was able to pull the mass out with a qtip and a lot of patience. The area that I cleaned out is now bleeding. Everytime that she eats she gets all mucusy and bubbly on the side of her mouth. She seems like she is having a hard time breathing too. She is really active usually, but when she eats or drinks she gets the bubbles and seems uncomfortable. Any advice would help.

So sorry tp see that you have waited so long for a reply... do you give your chickens any Apple Cider Vinegar with their water? If not. I suggest you do so straight away, ACV can help with removing mucous - give 4 teaspoonfuls ACV per gallon of water .....but only in plastic containers!

It may be advisable to start her on an antibiotic such as a tetracycline based one.. keep her isolated from the main flock and ensure she is warm... maybe keep her indoors... it is easier to observe them indoors.

Good luck!

Suzie

I do give ACV daily in the plastic container. She is currently inside iin my husbands bathroom.
He isn't impressed.
I started her on Sulmet yesterday. I just gave your water via syringe and she is eating feed soaked in water with plain yogurt mixed in. any ideas on what it could be?

Laryngotracheitis or some other respiratory disease? Might research that and see if it looks like what your seeing. If you do suspect a respiratory disease I'd probably put her on Tylan 50 for 5 to 7days and see if she improves.

Can you post a picture of the inside of her mouth? Sounds like it could be canker or a sinus infection/URI. Canker would be treated with metronidazole and a URI with an antibiotic.

I have not been able to get a picture that is that clear. I will try again tomorrow. I do have Tylan 200 and I can give her some of that. I am guess that Tylan is better than Sulmet?

I had to clean the bubbles out to get a picture. The yucky in her throat is on her right hand side. In this last picture you can kind of see the yellow back there. One other thing that I did notice tonight. She seems to not have normal control of her tongue. It is almost like it is flopping around right and left more left and not working like it normally does to drink water. Any ideas will help. I love this girl even if she is old :)
