I am still learning. I just bought a chicken 1 week ago (Friday). She is an ameraucana roughly 4 months old. When I got her her eye was running. I was told it was a possible injury. So I took her home and have kept her quarantined and started eye rinse and antibiotic eye drops. On Sunday (6 days ago) her eye was bubbly and running. Per advise on this and other pages I gave her a shot of Tylan 50 .5mg. Monday I was able to talk with a vet and he advised me giving her water with the Tylan 50 in it for 5 days. I was told she should improve. Her eye is just as bad (still only 1 eye). I don’t know what to do at this point. I am worried she might get my other chickens sick if it’s something that is contagious. She is itching her face/eye a lot and rubbing her eye on her side so I can tell it is bothering her. She isn’t coughing. No runny nose or sneezing. Poop looks normal to me. Eating and drinking a lot. In fact her crop was so full last night I got worried and took her food away to be sure it was emptying and it was. Any advise or suggestions? Can she be helped or is this a lost cause? I have put a lot of money in her already and I am hoping to help her if possible. Thank you!!

I'm not certain since your Vet gave instructions but I'm thinking maybe Terramycin, it's an antibiotic for the eye. Call your Vet & ask, think he's thinking it's a respiratory issue. I'm thinking if it's from an injury, eye antibiotic may help?

Hang in there, lets get more help from others..... @Eggcessive @junebuggena @Wyorp Rock @aart

Oh my, but she's gorgeous! With the one eye involved, I suspect an irritation of some sort. I'm thinking it could be a cyst or tiny benign tumor putting pressure on the eye, causing it to water and bubble.

I have an ancient hen with this issue. For the last five years she's had a steadily growing tumor over one eye. It hasn't caused her to feel ill or to curtail her busy life at age nine, but from time to time, the eye bubbles up and that causes her discomfort.

I've found that steroid eye drops and anti-inflammatory eye drops nip it right in the bud, and within hours, it clears up. This has been working for my hen for five years, and the drops I use are cataract post surgery meds that I had on hand and that others have given me following their own surgeries. That would be the easiest way for you to come by these drugs, but perhaps a vet can help you or you could search online for them.

He is a state funded vet I found. I can’t find anyone in my area willing to see a chicken. I have another antibiotic here but not that one. I think it’s penicillin I will have to check.

Do you see any mites? Maybe something got into that eye.... hhmmmm....
@Eggcessive, @KikisGirls, @WVduckchick

You can give the Tylan orally. I wouldn't mix it unless you can't get her to take it any other way.

No I checked thoroughly for kites and found nothing. The state funded vet (no one else in my area will see chickens) recommended putting it in the water to prevent me from having to give injections. He mad it sound safer for the bird. Is this incorrect?

I'm not sure how fast something like that should clear up, but i agree, with only one eye being involved, and her otherwise healthy attitude, it seems more injury or similar, instead of respiratory. Her own scratching is probably making it worse, and not letting it clear up, but I'm not sure how to stop that. Wonder if her scratching herself could be a neurological issue?

She is a beauty!! I hope it clears up soon.

@casportpony thoughts?

Thank you! She only scratches this one side so I don’t believe it’s neurological but I could be wrong. I definitely think she makes it where it couldn’t heal if it were an injury. I have no idea how to stop her from scratching though.
